Excerpt from Historical Sketches: Of Virginia Hot Springs, Warm Sulphur Springs, and Bath County Virginia The journal of Dr. Thomas Walker, who was one of the the first men to make a trip into what is now Kentucky, throws some interesting sidelights on the Hot Springs. Dr. Walker left home March 6th and returned July lath, 1750. Two of his entries are, July 8, having shaved, shifted and made new shoes we left our useless rags at ye camp and got to Walker Johnston's about noon. We moved over to Robt. Arm strong's (3) in the afternoon and staid there all night. The people here are very hospitable and would be better able to support travellers was it not for the great num ber of Indian warriors that frequently take what they want from them, much to their prejudice. Excerpt from The Invalid's Guide to the Virginia Hot Springs: Containing an Account of the Medical Properties of These Waters The suspicious and censorious, who are seldom backward in tendering a disinterested and kind cau tion, have succeeded in satisfying many that I am an unsafe adviser as to the proper method of using these baths. They urge, that I own the boarding establish ment, and am interested in keeping the visiters here as long as possible, and if permitted, would advise and influence them accordingly. But this certainly is a most perverted view of the subject. If I could and were so to direct them as to render them nuga tory, no cures could be effected - they would soon lose their reputation and as property become value less. And, on the other hand, one case manifestly injured, might keep away more persons than ten cures would attract to them; and if the owner was the veriest knave in Christendom, his pecuniary ih terest would oblige him to advise that application of the waters, which in his judgment would cflect the speediest cure. So the invalid may see at the first glance, that he has a guarantee against intentional mal-advice on the part of the owner, which he can not possibly have on the part of any one else. Excerpt from Hot Springs, Past and Present Not far from Hot Springs, Mountain Island stands boldly in mid-stream; and the turbulent river, after dashing itself madly against its rocky face, is divided into two currents, to meet again below it after passing over a picturesque fall. At that place the train passes through the Rock Cut, a dangerous place on the road for any track walker, and already marked by one tragedy. A tramp mother and her five forlorn little children were overtaken by a passenger train at this spot, and the mother was killed while trying to rescue one of her younger children. A few seconds after passing this spot, the train swings around a curve, and dashes on to the bridge at Deep Water. Here the river is so narrow that one would think an active boy could jump across it, but the water is forty feet deep or more, and in a wreck at this point some years ago the engine and tender were completely buried out of sight, except one small corner of the tender which could still be seen above the water. Just below the bridge the river is very broad and it is here that the valley of Hot Springs is first seen. It makes a beautiful picture from this point.
