Two siblings, Elfrida and Edred Arden, have recently become poor. However, the siblings inherit a ruined castle previously owned by a baron, and together they explore the depths of its mystery, hoping to find a treasure that will restore the castle and turn their luck around. Going back in time, they discover magical things they have never dreamed of. The siblings are swept off to see the plans of Napoleon and the inside of the Tower of London, and they even encounter a mouldiwarp (a magical mole). Most surprising of all: they find their lost father in South America, but is there still time to save him? A beautiful tale about family, sacrifice, and self-discovery. Excellent for fans of C.S. Lewis, Lemony Snicket and Madeleine L'Engle. Born in Kennington in 1858, Edith Nesbit wrote and co-authored over 60 beloved adventures at the beginning of the 20th century. Among her most popular books are "The Story of the Treasure-Seekers" (1899), "The Phoenix and the Carpet" (1904), and "The Railway Children" (1906). Many of her works became adapted to musicals, movies, and TV shows. Along with her husband Hubert Bland, she was among the first members of the Fabian society - a socialist debating club. A path in London close to her home was named "Railway Children Walk" in her honor, manifesting her legacy as one of the pioneers within the children’s fantasy genre.

Two impoverished children, Edred and Elfrida Arden, inherit the decrepit Arden Castle and search for the lost family fortune that will allow them to rebuild it. With the assistance of the magical Mouldiwarp (mole), they travel back in time to earlier periods of English history, searching for clues. During their journeys into the past, the children encounter several historical events: 1807: Napoleon's planned invasion of the United Kingdom, the British military response, and the smuggling around Dymchurch Bay (called "Lymchurch" in the story) ca. 1705: a visit from the "Chevalier St. George" (the Old Pretender) during the reign of Queen Anne 1605: the Gunpowder Plot and a meeting with Sir Walter Raleigh in the Tower of London, from which the children escape using the same stratagem Lady Nithsdale would use in 1717 ca. 1535: a May Day celebration with Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII, with premonitions of Anne's execution. The final episode, in which the children rescue their father from a lost civilization in South America, is reminiscent of the legends of El Dorado and other Cities of Gold. 10% of all profits will be donated to charities. ================ KEYWORDS/TAGS: House of Arden, edith Nesbit, childrens fantasy, children’s story, tales, fables, children’s book, Edred, Elfrida, arden’s lord, mouldiwarp, mole, boney’s times, Bonaparte, landing of the French, highwayman, secret panel, key, parlour, guy fawkes, prisoners in the tower, tower of London, white wings, brownie, developments, films, clouds, may-blossom, pearls, find, treasure, Hat, bow, flourish, walk Slowly, Red-Brick, Sidewalk, pavement, Aye, Turning Pages, Quick, Anxious, Carrier’s Cart, Hoity-Toity, Old Lady, witch, gnarled, wizened, Severe; Manners, gift, Tea And Sugar, Mouldiwarp, mole, magic, Little Run, Jump, Catch, invasion, Landing, Fleet, Lymchurch Bay, white clock, Sit Down, Line Of Daisies, New Scarf, Modish, modern, mod, Shoot, Betty, Candle, Voices, Truth, Little Miss, Shake, Big Chair, Fall, E. And it was-it was the living image of the little pig-like animal that was stamped in gold above the chequered shield on the cover of the white book in which they had found the spell. And as on the yellowy white of the vellum book-cover, so here on the thymy grass of the knoll it shone golden. The children stood perfectly still. They were afraid to move lest they should scare away this little creature which, though golden, was alive and moved about at their feet, turning a restless nose to right and left."It is," said Elfrida again, very softly, so as not to frighten it."What?" Edred asked, though he knew well enough."Off the book that we got the spell out of.""That was our crest on the top of our coat-of-arms, like on the old snuff-box that was great-grandpapa's.""Well, this is our crest come alive, that's all."

Edith Nesbit (1858-1924) was an English author and poet who wrote or collaborated on over 60 works of children's literature. She was also a political activist and co-founded the Fabian Society, a socilaist organisation later affiliated to the Labour Party. Among her best-known children's books are The Story of the Treasure Seekers (1899) and The Wouldbegoods (1901), both featuring the Bastable family, and The Railway Children (1906) which was filmed in 1970. Nesbit also wrote for adults, including a number of novels, short stories and four collections of horror stories. Scottish graphic artist and illustrator Harold Robert Millar (1869-1942), best known for his illustrations for children books and fantasy literature, had an extensive working relationship with E. Nesbit and this edition includes his original illustrations for the book throughout. The story relates the adventures of two impoverished children who inherit the decrepit Arden Castle and search for the long-lost family fortune which will help them rebuild it. With the assistance of the magical Mouldiwarp they travel back in time to earlier periods of English history searching for clues. First published in 1908.
