Ancient Celts saw "thin places" where heaven and earth came strangely close to touching. Stephen Copeland experienced something similar when his mentor took him to the Double Door Inn, an historic hole-in-the-wall blues venue in Charlotte, North Carolina. This unassuming place invited Copeland further into a spiritual journey that calls out to each of us: to open our senses and "tune our ears" to thin places all around; to become aware of sacred spaces in everyday places. When Copeland learned the half-century-old Double Door Inn would be tragically closing, he made the old white house of sound his home during its final year. What do thin places teach us about ourselves? What do they teach us about reality itself? And what do we do when they're gone? Copeland's soul-searching journey--with the Double Door as his guide--will help readers become more present and attentive to the thinness of reality as we walk "with our feet on the ground and our soul in the stars."

"If now a swell from the Deep has swept over this planetary ship of earth, and I, who alone chanced to find myself in the furthest stern, as the sole survivor of her crew . . . What then, my God, shall I do?" The Purple Cloud is widely hailed as a masterpiece of science fiction and one of the best "last man" novels ever written. A deadly purple vapor passes over the world and annihilates all living creatures except one man, Adam Jeffson. He embarks on an epic journey across a silent and devastated planet, an apocalyptic Robinson Crusoe putting together the semblance of a normal life from the flotsam and jetsam of his former existence. As he descends into madness over the years, he becomes increasingly aware that his survival was no accident and that his destiny?and the fate of the human race?are part of a profound, cosmological plan.

Architects are used to designing visually. In order to expand their basic design tools, this book explores the interactions between sound, space, hearing, and architecture. To this end, the author uses contemporary and historic buildings and projects, but also fictional, philosophical, and theoretical approaches – the idea is not only to define sound as a source, but also as an instrument of architectural space. By introducing a metatheory of "critical hearing", designers are able to acoustically test their projects and contribute to their design with auditive input, already at the design stage.

"In these lyric poems technique, emotional pitch, and intellect combine in sublime balance. Exhilarating in its range, the work of Adam Sol is gentle and mournful, attuned to physical surroundings, and full of erotic joy, erotic threat, history, elegy, comic absurdity, and acts of disturbing ventriloquism—all stitched together with a tightly scored thematic coherence. These poems are about music, but they are also about the silence it breaks and the inevitable recurrence of that silence."

The Order Of Sounds written by Francois J. Bonnet and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-01 with Philosophy categories.

This study of the subtlety, complexity, and variety of modes of hearing maps out a “sonorous archipelago”—a heterogeneous set of shifting sonic territories shaped by the vicissitudes of desire and discourse. Profoundly intimate yet immediately giving onto distant spaces, both an “organ of fear” and an echo chamber of anticipated pleasures, an uncontrollable flow subject to unconscious selection and augmentation, the subtlety, complexity, and variety of modes of hearing has meant that sound has rarely received the same philosophical attention as the visual. In The Order of Sounds, François J. Bonnet makes a compelling case for the irreducible heterogeneity of “sound,” navigating between the physical models constructed by psychophysics and refined through recording technologies, and the synthetic production of what is heard. From primitive vigilance and sonic mythologies to digital sampling and sound installations, he examines the ways in which we make sound speak to us, in an analysis of listening as a plurivocal phenomenon drawing on Foucault, Deleuze and Guattari, Barthes, Nancy, Adorno, and de Certeau, and experimental pioneers such as Tesla, Bell, and Raudive. Stringent critiques of the “soundscape” and “reduced listening” demonstrate that univocal ontologies of sound are always partial and politicized; for listening is always a selective fetishism, a hallucination of sound filtered by desire and convention, territorialized by discourse and its authorities. Bonnet proposes neither a disciplined listening that targets sound “itself,” nor an “ocean of sound” in which we might lose ourselves, but instead maps out a sonorous archipelago—a heterogeneous set of shifting sonic territories shaped and aggregated by the vicissitudes of desire and discourse.

Getting Ready to Read directly addresses the phonological needs of preschool students, emergent readers, and English-language learners. The center activities in this book help children learn how to analyze and apply the five levels of phonemic awareness (rhythm and rhyme, parts of a word, sequence of sounds, separation of sounds, and manipulation of sounds) in isolation before applying them to written language. Each easy-to-prepare activity is presented pictorially for children to follow and in print for a parent to read when the activity is sent home for extra practice. As children practice and master the phonological skills presented in this book, they will be ready to read! Book jacket.
