Whenever the British Press wants to attack the Royal Family, they make a jibe about “their foreign roots”. The Royals – as they say – are simply a posh version of German invaders. But did German relatives really influence decisions made by any British monarchs or are they just an “imagined community”, invented by journalists and historians? The Royal Archives at Windsor gave the authors – among others John Röhl, doyen of 19th century monarchical history – open access to Royal correspondences with six German houses: Hanover, Prussia, Mecklenburg, Coburg, Hesse and Battenberg.

More than 50,000 Indians lived in the area now known as North Carolina at the time of Christopher Columbuss arrival in the New World. The Formation North Carolina Coastal and Eastern Counties examines the history of this Native American Indian population. It also focuses upon the formation of North Carolina from colonial times; tracing the origins of its earliest settlers, including Native Americans. By the middle of the nineteenth century, the number of American Indians on official census rolls had been reduced drastically, possibly due to the threat of removal of people identified as Indians. Still, the Indian population thrived in spite of governmental attempts to remove them. Author Milton E. Campbell offers extensive documentation of the survival of Native American Indians and their culture into the twenty-first century in North Carolina. The first three chapters of the book lay the foundation for chapters discussing individual Native American Tribes within North Carolina. Also included is an overview of the surnames that were identified as Indian names in the 1900 Census of Robeson County. The conclusion includes three short personal interviews on Native American ancestry in North Carolina Coastal and Eastern Counties. Explore the intriguing and fascinating history of eastern North Carolina with this detailed, engaging study.

Charles James Fox and William Pitt the Younger were the two political giants of their day - the greatest of orators, and the fiercest of rivals. But did the two men have anything in common? Each was a younger son of distinguished fathers, who themselves had been bitter rivals for power a generation earlier, and each came to prominence at a very young age. Temperamentally, however, they could hardly have been more different. Fox was genial, tolerant, gregarious, self-indulgent, rash, a reckless gambler and a drinking companion of the Prince of Wales (later the Prince Regent and George IV) whereas Pitt was cautious, self-controlled (though also a heavy drinker), calculating, ruthless and misanthropic. Their fates were heavily influenced by their respective relationships with George III, who formed an insensate hostility to Fox, using unconstitutional means to exclude him from power, while favouring Pitt, whom he appointed as Prime Minister at the age of 24, and maintained in office for 17 years (plus a further two years in his second administration). The result was that Fox enjoyed only three very short periods as Foreign Minister, and was effectively Leader of the Opposition for a record 23 years. But he did achieve a late triumph when, following the death of Pitt, he became the dominant member of the `Government of All the Talents' and lived long enough to be able to introduce the bill which abolished the slave trade. Featuring a wide cast of characters, this book sheds new light on the political landscape of Georgian England and two of the leading political players of the age.
