Excerpt from The Huguenots in France and America, Vol. 1 of 2 The Memoir of the family of La Fontaine, pub lished in New York, and translated by one of the descendants, finds no corresponding memoir in this country. Yet there are enough records left to prove, that a similar noble spirit animated the Huguenots in America. From this most interesting manuscript, I have been permitted to extract the following pas sage not inserted in the printed edition. I give part of it in the old French, that the arduous work of the translator may be appreciated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from History of the Rise of the Huguenots, Vol. 1 of 2 The period of about half a century with which these volumes are concerned may properly be regarded as the formative age of the Huguenots of France. It included the first planting of the reformed doctrines, and the steady growth of the Reformation in spite of obloquy and persecution, whether exercised under the forms of law or vented in lawless violence. It saw the gathering and the regular organization of the reformed communities, as well as their consolidation into one of the most orderly and zealous churches of the Protestant family. It witnessed the failure of the bloody legislation of three successive monarchs, and the equally abortive efforts of a fourth monarch to destroy the Huguenots, first with the sword and afterward with the dagger. At the close of this period the faith and resolution of the Huguenots had survived four sanguinary wars into which they had been driven by their implacable enemies. They were just entering upon a fifth war, under favorable auspices, for they had made it manifest to all men that their success depended less upon the lives of leaders, of whom they might be robbed by the hand of the assassin, than upon a conviction of the righteousness of their cause, which no sophistry of their opponents could dissipate. Excerpt from Henry of Navarre and the Huguenots in France Lefevre and his friends did little more than give expression to the general desire that the Church should be reformed from within. They were sup ported by the sympathy of the scholars and men of letters who had long been engaged in a bitter quarrel with the monkish pedants, to whom the system and the maxims of the schoolmen were not less sacred than the cardinal doctrines of the Church. The false renderings, the spurious documents, the historical frauds and obsolete philosophy, on which the Catholic theologians of the day relied, hardly allowed a learned man to be orthodox. The Huguenots were a group of French Protestants who faced persecution and violence at the hands of the Catholic Church in the 16th and 17th centuries. Many of them fled to America, where they established thriving communities and made significant contributions to American society. This book, written by Hannah Farnham Sawyer Lee, provides a detailed account of the history of the Huguenots, their struggles, and their ultimate triumphs. It's a fascinating look at a little-known chapter of American history. Excerpt from The Huguenots in France: After the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes, With Memoirs of Distinguished Huguenot Refugees and a Visit to the Country of the Vaudois But besides the Huguenots who contrived to escape from France during the dragonnades which preceded and the persecutions which followed the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes, there was still a very large number of Huguenots remaining in France who had not the means wherewith to fly from their country.
