Various examples of creation myths where the body of the first ancestor or god is quartered to create the tribe are raised, and a connection is made between representations of the society and "heavenly ladders." Carpenter discusses the close correlation between body painting, dancing costumes, house posts and memorial columns. What distinguishes genealogical pattens from representations of human figures are continuous limbs, shared by multiple figures. Myths of birth from limbs are related. The human body is used as a metaphor for society and kinship, both visually and conceptually. Dismembering and sacrificing rituals are discussed in the last chapter. This is a study in the field of comparative philosophy of religion. It initiates a dialogue between St Augustine and Rāmānuja by focusing on two central themes - time and embodiment - that play a crucial role in their thought. The elaborations of these two themes by St Augustine and Rāmānuja have continued to exert a tremendous influence on the histories of European thought and of Hindu movements centred around the notion of bhakti. The examination of the symbolism through which these thinkers articulate their understanding of time and embodiment also challenges certain stereotypes related to classical Indian thought and Latin Christendom, such as the former's lack of historical consciousness and the latter's denigration of the human body. First printed in 1970, Natural Symbols is Douglas' most controversial work. It represents a work of anthropology in its widest sense, exploring themes such as the social meaning of natural symbols and the image of the body in society. This work focuses on the ways in which cultures select natural symbols from the body and how every natural symbol carries a social meaning. She also introduces her grid/group theory, which she sees as a way of keeping together what the social sciences divide and separate.
