Iconicity has become a popular notion in contemporary linguistic research. This book is the first to present a synthesis of the vast amount of scholarship on linguistic iconicity which has been produced in the previous decades, ranging from iconicity in phonology and morpho-syntax to the role of iconicity in language change. An extensive analysis is provided of some basic but nonetheless fundamental questions relating to iconicity in language, including: what is a linguistic sign and how are linguistic signs different from signs in general? What is an iconic sign and how may iconicity be involved in language? How does iconicity pertain to the relation between language and cognition? This book offers a new and comprehensive theoretical framework for iconicity in language. It is argued that the linguistic sign is fundamentally arbitrary, but that iconicity may be involved on a secondary level, adding extra meaning to an utterance.

"From 19th century exploration narratives to twentieth century screenings of Nanook of the North, Canada's far North has always commanded a strong fascination, tinged with romanticism and exoticism, for non-Aboriginal peoples. Contact Zones explores a range of Canadian textual and visual depictions of northern Aboriginal life, gender and family relations in the post-World War II period, asking how and why certain images and understandings of Aboriginal life came to dominate, while others were marginalized or suppressed. A critical analysis of the dominant and competing ideological assumptions about northern Aboriginal peoples that circulated through Canadian culture is particularly important for the post-World War II period, as the far North was increasingly occupied by Euro-Canadians, targeted as frontier of economic development, and Aboriginal lives were managed far more intensely by the state than ever before. Images of the Indigenous North were also integral to nation-building efforts which attempted to integrate Aboriginal peoples into an expanded version of Canadian history and citizenship, though still on terms that were ultimately racialized, gendered, and colonial. The resilient and changing constructions of Northern Aboriginal life are explored in Contact Zones through an analysis of television and documentary film, as well as textual sources such as women's travel narratives, popular anthropology and history, fictional writing, and northern testimony from the Royal Commission on the Status of Women. Grounded in archival and documentary research, and informed by interdisciplinary writing on culture, Contact Zones argues that these forms of cultural production must be seen as both instruments and reflections of colonial consolidation. Images of the Aboriginal North tell us more about the viewer than the viewed, yet they still illuminate how the evolving relations of colonial encounter were understood, rationalized, and legitimized. Moreover, the cultural politics of the postwar period left an important legacy for the present, and thus continue to have an impact on Aboriginal lives in the North."--

Taking the break-up of the Soviet Union and the entry of Russia, China and India into the global market as the start of a new era of globalisation, Robert Adam compares new developments in architecture and urban design with major shifts in the balance of power since 1990. Based on the principle that design unavoidably follows social change, politics and economics, this analysis casts a new light on recent architecture. Starting with the lead up to events in the 1990s, links are established between the global dominance of the North Atlantic economies, architectural style and a dramatic increase in international architectural practice. The widely-observed homogeneity of the global consumer economy is examined in relation to branding, tourism and international competition between cities, and parallels are drawn with universal architectural and urban types, iconic architecture and the rise of the star architect. Between 1945 and 1970, Canada’s Department of National Defence sponsored scientific research into the myriad challenges of military operations in cold regions. To understand and overcome the impediments of the country’s cold climate, scientists studied cold-weather acclimatization, hypothermia, frostbite, and psychological morale for soldiers assigned to active duty in northern Canada. Frontier Science investigates the history of military science in northern Canada during this period of the Cold War, highlighting the consequences of government-funded research for humans and nature alike. The book reveals how under the guise of “environmental protection” research, the Canadian military sprayed pesticides to clear bushed areas, used radioactive substances to investigate vector-borne diseases, pursued race-based theories of cold tolerance, and enabled wide-ranging tests of newly developed weapons and equipment.
