Epilepsy has a fascinating history. To the medical historian Oswei Temkin it was 'the paradigm of the suffering of both body and soul in disease'. It is justifiably considered a window on brain function. And yet its story is more than simply a medical narrative, but one influenced also by scientific, societal and personal themes. Written for a medical and non-medical readership, this book describes the major developments in epilepsy between 1860–2020, a turbulent era in which science dominated as an explanatory model, medical theories and practices steered an erratic course, and societal attitudes and approaches to epilepsy fluctuated dramatically. In the middle of this maelstrom was the person with epilepsy at the mercy of social attitudes and legislation, and at times harmed as well as helped by medicine and science. So entangled is the history that intriguingly, as an entity, epilepsy may now be thought not even to exist.

"Epilepsy occupies a unique position in the pantheon of human ailments. It is now, as it has always been, the unparalleled hierophant of neurological disease, but it is much more than this. A multifaceted phenomenon, it has in the swirling waters of human experience, complex scientific, societal and personal significations and meanings, and has attained a symbolism (an 'idea') which has become deeply embedded in the culture of mankind. In consequence, although primarily a medical history, the topic of this book - the story of Epilepsy's voyage in the long twentieth century (1860-2020) - has been shaped by other strong currents in addition to that of medicine, and to ignore these currents would be to isolate epilepsy and deprive it of any meaning. Although similar considerations apply in many diseases this is probably truer of epilepsy than of most others. To Oswei Temkin, epilepsy was a 'paradigm of the suffering of both body and soul in disease', and with its broad and deep connections, who can disagree?"--

Neurotransmitters And Epilepsy written by Phillip C. Jobe and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1987-11-30 with Medical categories.

The idea for this book has evolved from our desire to present a conceptual approach to the study of neurotransmitters in epilepsy. Such an approach requires an understanding of the function of neurotransmitter systems in various experimental models of epilep sy. Toward this goal we have included in this book chapters on neurotransmitter systems in nine different epilepsy models. To com plete the coverage of this topic, there is a chapter on the role of selected neurotransmitters in the various types of human epilep sies. In the final chapter the editors integrated the neurotransmit ter data from the various epilepsy models into a matrix from which a better understanding of the function of these neurotransmitters in modulating epileptogenesis may be obtained. The information found in this book is not the result of a sym posium on this topic, but rather a review of available information on neurotransmitters in each of the experimental models. The evi dence is presented by knowledgeable researchers using these models. This approach gives a current, broader, and more thorough presentation of each of the topics. We therefore feel that this is not just a glimpse at the subject matter, but a panoramic view of the topic.

Neuronal Substrates Of Sleep And Epilepsy written by Mircea Steriade and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-05-08 with Medical categories.

Conventional wisdom assumes that sleep is a resting state of the brain, with negligible activity of cortical neurons. Here, the author brings new evidence favoring the idea that during sleep, memory traces acquired while awake are consolidated. Mircea Steriade focuses on the coalescence of different sleep rhythms in interacting corticothalamic networks and on three types of paroxysmal disorders: spike-wave seizures as in absence epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut seizures, and temporal-lobe epilepsy. Many physiological correlates of waking and sleep states as well as diverse types of epileptic seizures are also discussed.
