The author characterizes this book as a "docu-story". As such, it is an exceptionally well-researched and skillfully written chronology of the history of Russia, the Soviet Union and the cold War. The work is unusual and unique. It is unusual because unlike most books of an historical nature, it is free-flowing and not tightly structured. It is unique because it is written with considerable input from the author's personal experiences interwoven with perceptions and anecdotal observations. The work is Assertive: "I have no doubt that there was Cold War. I fought in it." (The Author); Candid: "Stalin is an unconscionable dictator, but I liked the little son-of-a-bitch." (Truman); Provocative: "Truman is worthless." (Stalin); and Challenging: "Why not set a goal just between the two of us let's find a practical way to solve our critical issues." (Reagan) and "we can set a specific agenda for how to straighten-out Soviet-American relations." (Gorbachev). Finally, it is Cautionary: "The world has become in many respects a safer place Unfortunately, it is also still a dangerous place, fraught with uncertainty." This book opens new perspectives into the Cold War ideological confrontations. Using Austria and Finland as an example, it shows how the Cold War battles for the hearts and minds of the people also influenced policies in countries that wished to stay outside the conflict. Following the model of older European neutrals, Austria and Finland sought to combine neutrality with democracy. The combination was eagerly challenged by ideological Cold Warriors on both sides of the divide and questioned at home too. Was neutrality risking the neutrals’ commitment to democracy, or did the commitment to the western type of democracy threaten their commitment to neutrality? Confronting these doubts grew into an organic part of practicing neutrality in the Cold War world. The neutrals needed to be exceptionally clear regarding the ideological foundations of their neutrality. Successful neutrality required a great deal of conceptual consistence and domestic unanimity. None of this was pre-given in Austria or Finland. However, in the model of Switzerland and Sweden, (armed) neutrality was systematically integrated with the official state ideology and promoted as a part of national identity. Legacies of these policies outlived the end of the Cold War.

Between 1947 and 1991, the United States and the Soviet Union engaged in an escalating geopolitical confrontation known as the Cold War. Historians differ on the exact start and end dates of this period, with some pointing to the Truman Doctrine in 1947 and the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. Throughout this era, there was no direct large-scale warfare between the two superpowers, but they sponsored significant regional conflicts, often referred to as proxy wars, which earned the title of a "cold war." The rivalry began after their temporary alliance and victory over Nazi Germany in 1945, as both countries sought global dominance based on their respective ideologies and geopolitical interests. While nuclear weapons and conventional military forces played a role in this struggle for supremacy, other methods, such as psychological warfare, propaganda, espionage, extensive embargoes, and competition in areas like sports and the Space Race, were also employed. The Western Bloc, led by the United States and other First World nations, was generally characterized by liberal democratic principles. However, they were often allied with authoritarian regimes, many of which were former colonies of Western powers. On the other hand, the Eastern Bloc, dominated by the Soviet Union and its Communist Party, had a significant influence on the world during and after World War II. Russia supported communist parties and revolutions worldwide, while the United States backed right-wing regimes and movements. The Cold War's battleground extended to nearly every colonial state as they gained independence between 1945 and 1960.

This book is concerned with the ideological origins of the cold war and how it was fought by economic means. The book revolves around four major themes. Firstly, it is argued that the origin of the cold war is not to be found in rational, economic motivation, but in ideology through which both the East and West perceived 'reality'. Secondly, these ideological preconceptions generated complex feed-back processes of hostility that lasted forty years. Thirdly, although this hostility was expressed in political, ideological and military terms, the decisive battle was fought in economic terms as each nation devoted resources to unproductive military purposes. Finally, the end of the cold war came with the collapse of the dysfunctional Soviet economy. Although, the Soviets lost the cold war, in the light of the ascendancy of its competitors, the United States did not win it.
