P. M. Fleming in his recent paper before the Institution of Electrical Engineers, to which we refer in the present issue (pp. 9 dealt with a subject of vital importance. Industrial research laboratories may be of many kinds. They may be associated with individual works, groups of factories, or associations of manufacturers. In some cases different types, run by the same company, may work hand in hand, as, for example, the laboratory at. Cleveland, Ohio, which deals with general research problems, and the more industrialised laboratory at Schenectady, which is mainly concerned with technical and manufacturing problems. Of great interest, also, is the experimental factory where promising inventions can be tested on a commercial scale, thus preventing disappointment and encouraging manufacturers to take up immature but hopeful inventions which require commercialisation. Mr. Fleming also deals with the training of the research staff. We entirely agree with his insistence on the need for scientific attainments and University training on such a staff. Such qualifications, however, can only be secured if they are rewarded by corresponding remuneration. There must be as good prospects of advancement as exist in any other department of the firm's work, and a proper recognition of the valuable work that such a research staff can do. Excerpt from The Illuminating Engineer, Vol. 15: The Journal of Scientific Illumination; Official Organ of the Illuminating Engineering Society (Founded in London 1909); Jan. 1922 to Dec. 1922 The campaign being conducted in the Press in favour of a brighter London has assumed various forms, but so far as the literal interpretation of the phrase is concerned it will naturally meet with sympathy on the part of illuminating engineers. It is agreed that much might be done by the improvement of existing lighting conditions, to make London amore cheerful place in the evening. But discrimination in the use of light should be shown. Among other measures proposed may be mentioned the display of lighted shop-windows after business hours, a practice adopted by various stores prior to the war, but which has lately fallen into disuse, chie y from motives of economy. But it may well be urged that a series of well illuminated and tastefully arranged show-windows forms one of the most attractive and probably most economical forms of advertisement, and have been aptly termed The Silent Salesman. Apart from their utility to the merchant such windows furnish a valuable aid to street-lighting, provided the practice is adopted of screening lights and avoiding the exhibition of glaring lamps at a low-level. The same remarks apply to illuminated signs. The whole question was discussed before the Illuminating Engineering Society last year, * and we do hope that those concerned with the movement for brightening London will use their in uence to avoid glare and excessive contrasts in brightness - to prevent light being used in such a way that it becomes a nuisance. Let us have not merely a brighter London, but a London which leads the world in the skill and discrimination that it exercises in the use of light. Portable ashlight lamps are finding many applications. A form of apparatus developed in the United States utilises a small hand driven magneto to supply current to the lamp, in place of the customary dry battery.
