Islamic architecture has enriched design with a wide variety of structural shapes, including among others, unique arches, a wide variety of vaults and domes which allow for new forms to be developed. The influence that these structural forms have in non-Islamic countries was one of the themes of the 3rd International Conference on Islamic Heritage Architecture and Art, at which the included papers were presented. There is much to learn from past experiences to arrive at solutions which are environmentally sound and sustainable in the long term. As conventional energy resources become scarce, the Islamic design heritage can offer invaluable lessons on how to deal in an efficient manner with cases of hard and extreme environments. Traditional architecture and urban environments in most Islamic countries are now being eroded by overemphasis on a global type of architecture and city planning. As a consequence, many regions are losing their identity. It will become increasingly important for new developments to take light of what the classical Islamic urban designs and architectures have to offer modern society. An equally important aspect covered is the analysis of the materials employed and the types of structural elements, particularly those unique to Islamic architecture. Preserving this heritage requires the development of appropriate conservation techniques in response to the different materials used and the ways structural forms work, including under extreme conditions, such as earthquakes. These papers deal with the design of many types of buildings in Islamic countries, including not only the better known public buildings like mosques, mausolea, citadels and forts, but also houses and gardens, engineering works such as bridges and dams, irrigation systems and many others which have also had a profound impact on society.

A New York Times Notable Book of 2020 “[A] sweeping and authoritative history" (The New York Times Book Review), Black Wave is an unprecedented and ambitious examination of how the modern Middle East unraveled and why it started with the pivotal year of 1979. Kim Ghattas seamlessly weaves together history, geopolitics, and culture to deliver a gripping read of the largely unexplored story of the rivalry between between Saudi Arabia and Iran, born from the sparks of the 1979 Iranian revolution and fueled by American policy. With vivid story-telling, extensive historical research and on-the-ground reporting, Ghattas dispels accepted truths about a region she calls home. She explores how Sunni Saudi Arabia and Shia Iran, once allies and twin pillars of US strategy in the region, became mortal enemies after 1979. She shows how they used and distorted religion in a competition that went well beyond geopolitics. Feeding intolerance, suppressing cultural expression, and encouraging sectarian violence from Egypt to Pakistan, the war for cultural supremacy led to Iran’s fatwa against author Salman Rushdie, the assassination of countless intellectuals, the birth of groups like Hezbollah in Lebanon, the September 11th terrorist attacks, and the rise of ISIS. Ghattas introduces us to a riveting cast of characters whose lives were upended by the geopolitical drama over four decades: from the Pakistani television anchor who defied her country’s dictator, to the Egyptian novelist thrown in jail for indecent writings all the way to the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in 2018. Black Wave is both an intimate and sweeping history of the region and will significantly alter perceptions of the Middle East.

A stunning journey through the Holy Land, as told by the rare maps and prints that have long inspired Jewish, Christian, and Muslim pilgrimages. How have people imagined the Holy Land, from the earliest days of the Roman Empire to the Modern Era? While Judaism and Islam sunk roots and flourished in the territory of their founders, Christianity came of age in Western Europe and the Byzantine Empire. Ever since, Christians have yearned to walk in the footsteps of the Bible, to imagine the route of the Exodus or the places of Jesus's ministry. Muslims, too, longed to see the geographical contours of the ummah, the greater Muslim community. In response, cartographers from Late Antiquity to the Modern Age drew their inspiration from Jewish, Christian, and Muslim pilgrimages to depict, with growing confidence, the exotic locations of the Holy Land. Mapping the Holy Land is the first book to tell the thrilling story of these pilgrimages and the incredible prints and maps that their travels spawned. Illustrated with rare, hand-colored maps and engravings throughout and riveting scene-setting history, this remarkable volume from rare maps collector Neal Asbury, CEO of The Legacy Companies and host of Neal Asbury's Made in America, and National Geographic best-selling author Jean-Pierre Isbouts, coauthors of Mapping America, shows how the faithful overcame impossible odds to reach the Holy Land, and dives deep into the historical understanding of these elusive lands from Roman times up to the nineteenth century era of Ottoman Palestine.

In this groundbreaking research, Lt. Col. Abdulaziz (Binimad) Al-Ateeqi unveils Makkah at c. 600 AD in greater detail than ever before. Relying on the oldest existing texts from authentic sources and relevant maps to resurrect the layout and geography of Makkah as it was during the lifetime of Prophet Muḥammad (PBUH) (570-632 AD), the book's many exclusive maps and images provide a visual representation of the Holy City that remained seemingly impossible prior to this work. Adding new layers of insight to existing scholarship with many unique discoveries of his own, the author first highlights little-known references to Makkah in the Bible, the Qurʾān, and other ancient sources before taking readers on a brief journey from the earliest of times up until the time period depicted in this captivating, in-depth look at the city of the Prophet's birth. With special sections dedicated to the history of Makkah's clans and important landmarks like the Kaʿbah, Maqām Ibrāhīm, and the Prophet's homes, the book's 26 images also include original, full-color maps of Makkah's mountains, valleys, homes, wells, pathways, and marketplaces, along with detailed descriptions of each landmark and numerous insights into the history, politics, and personalities of Makkah during a crucial period, making this volume an essential companion to anyone with an interest in the Prophet's biography and the history of Islam.
