The Sachsenspiegel, or Saxon Mirror, compiled in 1235 by Eike von Repgow, may be said to mark the beginning of vernacular German jurisprudence. For the first time, Maria Dobozy offers an English translation of this influential lawbook, the oldest, and most important, set of customary law in the German language. This lawbook with its amendments marks a major shift in the history of German law from purely oral authority and transmission to a written documentation that allowed greater consistency in legal procedure. The reception of the lawbook was vast. It was rapidly adapted across Germany, as the four hundred manuscript versions demonstrate. Beyond Germany, it was copied as the paradigm for lawbooks in Prussia, Silesia, Poland, Ukraine, Hungary, and Bohemia. These codes of law became the standard for over three hundred years. The Sachsenspiegel contains a compilation of the legal practices at the time in Saxony, an ethnically mixed territory, and encompasses the legal customs and procedures that regulated the daily life of peasants and landlords. A complete illuminated manuscript in 60 full page color plates The Sachsenspiegel (lit. Saxon Mirror), was composed in Latin by Eike von Repgow between 1225 and 1235 and is Europe's first written record of customary law. Its translation into Low German made it also the first prose work written in the German vernacular language. The work covers a wide range of legal topics including administrative, constitutional and criminal law, as well as laws concerning inheritance, property rights and the regulation of disputes. There are approximately 400 extant versions of the manuscript, four of which include illuminations. These are named after their present locations: Heidelberg, Oldenburg, Dresden and Wolfenbüttel. The Heidelberg Sachsenspiegel (c. 1300) is the earliest of the four. It is presently held by the Heidelberg University Library.

"An art historian and a Germanist examine the pictures and text in the four densely illustrated manuscripts of the Sachsenspiegel that were produced in the century following its composition by Eike von Repgow. This is the first extensive study of these famous picture books in English. Using critical frameworks based on performative and feminist theory, the authors give detailed consideration to the social differences reshaped and maintained by text and image. Eike's project, realized in the early 1220s, was concerned with Christianizing secular law, and promoted peaceful interaction between diverse groups, including Saxon men and women, Jews, and Slavic Wends, and he mandated the provision of guardians for the young, the handicapped and the judicially impaired. Yet the later images variously support or subvert his text; changing emphases in the pictures accord with changing attitudes to women and Jews in the period of productionof these works, between c. 1300 and 1365. A burgeoning book culture in the fourteenth century carried Eike's law into the town halls at a time when market churches were being constructed in the judicial and economic hub of German cities, even as synagogues disappeared from town centres during the pogroms. This market complex became part of the material culture of the law. A final chapter traces the popularity and dissemination of the Sachsenspiegel picture-books up to 2010."--

In medieval Europe, the word fama denoted both talk (what was commonly said about a person or event) and an individual's ensuing reputation (one's fama). Although talk by others was no doubt often feared, it was also valued and even cultivated as a vehicle for shaping one's status. People had to think about how to "manage" their fama, which played an essential role in the medieval culture of appearances.At the same time, however, institutions such as law courts and the church, alarmed by the power of talk, sought increasingly to regulate it. Research on medieval and early modern travel literature has made great progress, which now allows us to take the next step and to analyze the correlations between the individual and space throughout time, which contributed essentially to identity formation in many different settings. The contributors to this volume engage with a variety of pre-modern texts, images, and other documents related to travel and the individual's self-orientation in foreign lands and make an effort to determine the concept of identity within a spatial framework often determined by the meeting of various cultures. Moreover, objects, images and words can also travel and connect people from different worlds through books. The volume thus brings together new scholarship focused on the interrelationship of travel, space, time, and individuality, which also includes, of course, women's movement through the larger world, whether in concrete terms or through proxy travel via readings. Travel here is also examined with respect to craftsmen's activities at various sites, artists' employment for many different projects all over Europe and elsewhere, and in terms of metaphysical experiences (catabasis).
