This research is aimed at finding empirical evidence to support the relationship between Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) compliance and the financial performance of South African companies on the JSE. An independent measure of the BEE score was obtained from the Empowerdex Top Empowerment Companies (TEC) ranking from 2004 to 2009. 14 sectors on the JSE were selected to ensure inclusion of all major industries in South Africa. A total of 209 companies were selected, and the multivariate exploratory technique of Cluster Analysis was used. The predictor variable of the company's BEE status was then compared to a number of financial performance indicators such as annual share price, price-tobook value ratio and the price-to-earnings ratio (i.e. the outcome variables). By standardising the variables of the BEE score and using Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR), the k-means Clustering method yielded four interpretable clusters with 15, 64, 95 and 35 companies respectively. The finding indicate that only in the case of the cluster of companies that increased it's BEE score, were all three profitability measures significantly different and, according to the means, in the direction of higher profitability. However, there were no significant differences in the results to support the proposition that low-BEE scores of companies had a negative impact on their profitability and their firm's value over time.

The ANC government has implemented various mechanisms to promote inclusivity of all economic citizens over the past 15 years. The main objectives of all the policies was to promote economic transformation in order to enable meaningful participation of black people in the economy and to change the racial composition of ownership and management structures of existing and new enterprises. The purpose of the research was to determine the contribution of Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) to the financial performance of companies on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) during the economic recession. The underlying assumption was that companies with greater overall BBBEE compliance rating should outperform companies with a lower overall BEE compliance rating. The top BBBEE rated companies on the JSE were analysed to determine whether these companies outperformed that sector indices. Market-to-book-value, Price-Earnings Ratio and Annual Return were used as financial performance measures. The results showed that there was a positive correlation between the companies' BBBEE rating and the financial performance. On further investigation it was revealed that on average the companies with greater BBBEE ratings did not outperform companies with lower BBBEE ratings nor did they outperform the sector indices ©2011, University of Pretoria. This book examines the relationship between business-based peacebuilding and the opportunities that emerge from the pluralisation of regulation. The core message is, notwithstanding the broad range of regulatory initiatives and actors that exist in conflict-affected settings, the state should assume responsibilities for defining the types of contribution that business can and ought to make to peace. It also demonstrates how the state, through different forms and methods of regulation, is well-placed to engage businesses to do so. It is particularly concerned with the potential for regulation to help address what is identified as a state of optimistic uncertainty in the field of business and peacebuilding. On one level, there is a sense of optimism around the types of contributions that businesses can and often do make as agents for peace. The book is about the impact of Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) on the shareprice of construction and property companies that implemented BEE transactions, post the enacting of the South African government BEE Act of 2003 and published their BEE transactions on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange News Service. The methodology for the impact on shareprice followed that of Brown S. J. and Warner J. B. (1980 and 1985) and measures if there were abnormal returns or residuals as a result of the BEE transaction events. Sharpe's Capital Asset Pricing Model was applied to calculate the expected returns. The abnormal returns or residuals were the difference between the expected returns and the actual returns. Further, the residuals were cumulated using the technique described in Fama, Fischer, Jensen and Roll to get Cumulative Average Residuals (CARS) which were plotted on a graph. When there was abnormal return, the CARS' plot resulted in fractiles which could clearly be identified on the CARS' plot. The findings in the book support the hypothesis that different BEE strategies have different effects and impact on the shareprice of the companies.
