Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2010 in the subject Sociology - Law, Delinquency, Abnormal Behavior, grade: A, The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine (-), language: English, abstract: Despite Trinidad and Tobago's wealth, experts say 25% live below the poverty line. According to Sookram (2008) more than a 1/4 of the population of oil-rich Trinidad lives below poverty line. Sookram said that 27.32% live below the poverty level despite the fact that Trinidad and Tobago has been classified as a high income country by the World Bank. "Is this why the crime rate in Trinidad and Tobago is probably the highest in the Caribbean?" David Garland (1996), posits that the group that suffer the most from crime tend to be the poorest and the least powerful members of society and will usually lack the resources to but security or the flexibility to adapt their routines or organized effectively against crime. This disparity between the rich and the poor which overlaps with the developing divisions between property- owning classes and those social groups who are deemed a threat to property will tend to propel us towards criminal behaviour. The term 'rich' may be defined as "the possession of material wealth, having abundant supply of desirable qualities or substances especially natural resources, having control of such assets and benefiting from the legislation." In contrast, 'poor' refers to the lack of specific resources, qualities or substances, with little or no possessions or money, having less than adequate in relation to the upper classes/the rich and wealthy. Socio-economic status is an economic and sociological combined measure of a persons work experience and of individual's or family's economic and social position relative to others based on income, education, wealth, occupation and social status in the community. As a result of this unequal distribution issue that arises between the rich and the poor, Clarke, Twoey (2001), has put fort the

This reader presents fresh insights on the rapidly expanding and changing crime-related problems in the Caribbean as well as provides information on new dimensions of crime and criminology that are occurring with increasing regularity. A path-breaking and comprehensive work, Crime Delinquency and Justice: A Caribbean Reader has come at a time when all societies in the Caribbean region are grappling with crime in all its forms; and when the structure of the justice system on which all these societies are founded is being challenged to adjust to changes in society locally and internationally. The work addresses both theoretical and practical issues indicated by the broad range of areas covered including: Theorizing a Caribbean Criminology; Juvenile Delinquency and Public Policy; Domestic Violence and the Criminal Justice System; Community Policing, Police Styles and Use of Force; Corrections; Crime Statistics; the Jury System; Drug Trafficking; Terrorism, Social Upheaval and Political Violence and Human Trafficking. Despite high crime rates among men in the Caribbean, rising rates of violence against women in the region, and a significant number of Caribbean nationals incarcerated abroad due to drug smuggling, existing research has yet to offer explanations that are tailored to the unique Caribbean societies and the individuals in them. This edited volume adds to the existing body of scientific, empirical and theoretical work on crime (victimization), and criminal justice in the Caribbean, with a specific focus on impacts of post-colonialism and gender. To investigate these impacts on a developing Caribbean criminology, the contributions in this volume focus on how impacts of post-colonialism, associated racial stereotypes, and/or gender throughout the Caribbean impact on (a) types of offending, (b) victimization, and (c) criminal justice system responses and policies. Bringing together a broad range of experts, this book sheds light on key criminological topics in the Caribbean, including victimization, risk factors for offending, subcultures of violence and particularly gendered violence, and the role of motherhood within matrifocal societies. It is essential reading for those engaged with Caribbean - or decolonial - Criminology and those engaged with comparative and international studies in crime and justice more generally.

Crime Violence And Security In The Caribbean written by M. Raymond Izarali and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-11-20 with Political Science categories.

Security challenges pose significant hardship for citizens of Caribbean nations. Public safety is threatened by high rates of crime – especially violent crime – in much of the region, the plague of the illicit drug trade, transnational organized crime, gangs, the current global proliferation of crimes of terrorism and related violent extremism and radicalization. The situation diminishes morale among the youth, their education and their future, and operates as a major push factor. Yet, surprisingly, there has been a scarcity of scholarly work that addresses these conditions. This interdisciplinary volume succinctly responds to the gap in criminological and security studies on the Caribbean by drawing attention to the understudied nexus of crime, violence, and security that is so pervasive in the region, and the ways in which underdevelopment re/creates environments for insecurity. The book is organized in three parts: Part one encompasses conceptualizations of crime, violence and punishment. Part two takes up country cases on crime and security. Part three addresses issues of regional security, both public and private. This timely volume will be valuable reading for scholars, students, practitioners and policy makers who share a critical interest in the scope, impact, and inter-relationality of crime, violence, and in/security in the region.

This report presents a comprehensive evaluation of the Cure Violence initiative implemented in Trinidad and Tobago from July 2015 to August 2017. It describes the evaluation’s methods and findings and includes three main components: a process evaluation, impact evaluation, and cost-effectiveness analysis. The process evaluation revealed that local staff successfully implemented some of the key elements of the Cure Violence model in a number of distressed and violent communities in the Port of Spain area. The impact evaluation, based on a series of quasi-experimental designs using multiple independent data sets, found significant and substantial reductions in violence, calls to the police for violent incidents, and gunshot wound admissions in a hospital located near the intervention. Based on these analyses, the report concludes that Project REASON reduced violence in the treatment area. Findings from the cost-effectiveness evaluation showed that Cure Violence cost, on average, approximately US$3,500 to US$4,500 for every violent incident it prevented. Given the profound costs of violence in both human and economic terms, these estimates provide hope not only that violence can be prevented, but also that effective solutions for preventing violence may be affordable

Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Law - Criminal process, Criminology, Law Enforcement, The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine (Criminology department), course: Criminology and Criminal Justice, language: English, abstract: The term ‘white-collar crime’ coined by Sutherland 1983 is defined as “a crime committed by a person of respectability and high social status in the course of his occupation.” This discourse examines white-collar crime in Trinidad and Tobago. The study utilizes data from relevant existing documents together with the evidence provided to the Commission of Enquiry which was set up to investigate the failure of CL Financial to examine and explain of the failure of the conglomerate. Even though the final report of the Commission of Enquiry into the failure of the CL Financial group remains outstanding to date, the study revealed that white-collar crime offences as defined by criminologists did in fact occur within the conglomerate. It found that the failure of the company was primarily due to poor accounting practices, corporate malfeasances, bad investments, payment of exorbitant bonuses and wages to top employees and other minor financial infractions.
