Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Politics - International Politics - General and Theories, grade: 84, Liverpool John Moores University, course: International politics, language: English, abstract: This essay deals with liberalism in international politics. Although there are some variations, distinctions and at times even contradictions within the liberal theory, several main themes of a liberal approach can be distinguished. The essay sets out to investigate what are the principal themes of a liberal approach to international politics and how they have been reflected in practice. There are substantial disagreements between many authors regarding the extent to which liberalist ideas have been realised within the international politics. Some regard liberalism, particularly with its manifestation in the global world economy as a very powerful and influential doctrine. Others, however, argue that liberalism lacks sufficient influence within Western societies and perhaps even more in non-Western ones and cannot return as a major political force due to the underlying tensions and contradictions It can be, however, argued that liberal ideas have come to dominate the economic sphere, although, it is questionable whether in the light of the recent financial crisis any further deregulation, particularly in financial sector is possible. In addition, the many internal contradictions between the liberal ideas, most notably the free market and human rights and the devastating effects of unfettered trade, such as environmental degradation, growing inequalities and economic dependencies call for a different approach to international politics, at least with regards to the economical policy.

Liberalism And Transformation written by Dillon S. Tatum and has been published by University of Michigan Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-08-02 with Political Science categories.

Liberalism and Transformation is the first scholarly work that explores the historical, philosophical, and intellectual development of global liberalism since the nineteenth century in the context of the deployment of violence, force, and intervention. Using an approach that includes interpretive and contextual analysis of texts from writers, philosophers, and policy-makers across nearly two centuries, as well as historiographical and historical analysis of archival documents (some of which have been recently declassified) and other media, Liberalism and Transformation narrates the messy history of emancipatory liberalism and its engagement with issues of war and peace. The book contributes to both a rethinking of liberal democracy and its relationship to world politics, as well as the effects of liberal internationalism on global processes. Furthermore, Liberalism and Transformation invites readers to reflect on global ethics and transformation in world politics. In the first place, it shows how ethical imaginings of the world have direct effects on actions of transformative importance. In the second place, it suggests that discourses are fluid, changing, and complex.

The Globalization Of Liberalism written by E. Hovden and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-01-12 with Political Science categories.

The Globalization of Liberalism demonstrates that liberalism is more deeply embedded in the structure of modern international political and economic order than is usually realised, and that at present there is a contested process of the 'globalization of liberalism'. As well as exploring liberalism's usefulness for understanding how international relations work, the contributors offer critical perspectives on the liberal structure of modern international society and places international liberalism into a global context by examining responses to liberalism in China, India and the Middle East.

Ethics Liberalism And Realism In International Relations written by Mark D. Gismondi and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-09-17 with Political Science categories.

This book explores the complex issue of international ethics in the two dominant schools of thought in international relations; Liberalism and Realism. Both theories suffer from an inability to integrate the ethical and pragmatic dimensions of foreign policy. Liberal policy makers often suffer from moral blindness and a tendency toward coercion in the international arena, whilst realists tend to be epistemic sceptics, incorporating Nietzsche’s thought, directly or indirectly, into their theories. Mark Gismondi seeks to resolve the issues in these two approaches by adopting a covenant based approach, as described by Daniel Elazar’s work on the covenant tradition in politics, to international relations theory. The covenant approach has three essential principles: policy makers must have a sense of realism about the existence of evil and its political consequences power must be shared and limited liberty requires a basis in shared values. Ethics, Realism and Liberalism in International Relations will be of interest to students and researchers of politics, philosophy, ethics and international relations.
