This report analyses the impact of new technologies on the quality of life of people with disabilities, including consumer technology and, of course, assistive technology. It takes into account the different types of disability, covering not only physical and sensorial impairments, but also intellectual disabilities, mental illnesses and restrictions in social participation due to personal or environmental factors. The study gives examples of good practice and indicates the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of new technologies for enhancing the quality of life of disabled people. Proposals are made for such enhancement through legislation, service delivery, design, standardisation and market development.

The familiar image of the disabled tends to emphasize their limitations and reduced quality of life. Assistive devices from the simple to the sophisticated, have become essential to intervention programs for this population. And not surprisingly the numbers of devices available are growing steadily. Assistive Technologies for People with Diverse Abilities offers expert analysis of pertinent issues coupled with practical discussion of solutions for effective support. Its comprehensive literature review describes current and emerging devices and presents evidence-based guidelines for matching promising technologies to individuals. Program outcomes are assessed, as are their potential impact on the future of the field. In addition, chapters provide detailed descriptions of the personal and social needs of the widest range of individuals with congenital and acquired conditions, including: Acquired brain damage. Worldwide diseases have changed to include more chronic conditions, while the majority of current health systems continue to provide treatment and acute care rather than continuity of care. Even more dramatic changes in the health needs of the world population are anticipated, with non-communicable diseases as the leading cause of disability. This publication, drawn up by a Council of Europe Committee of Experts, proposes appropriate means of prevention aimed at reducing disabilities caused by chronic disease. Recommendations made include: the setting up of individualised programmes of psycho-social rehabilitation aimed at the full development of the person, and the adoptions of measures to promote the full integration of people with disabilities into society.

Living In The State Of Stuck written by Marcia Joslyn Scherer and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with Medical categories.

Assistive technology is radically changing the lives of people with disabilities. Here, Dr. Scherer sets the background for this radical transformation and discusses the implications of assistive technology for the lives of those born disabled, or who become disabled later in life. In the author's words, "this book shows, how, paradoxically, the more technology became available and the more free from limitations individuals became, the more stuck they seemed." A severe disability no longer need prevent a person from attaining the same educational, personal, and career goals as other adults. Scherer details assistive devices that enhance the quality of their lives, mobility, speech, and ability to work. But while these devices may enhance independence, Scherer explains how friends and relatives can better understand the personal issues and needs that arise from living with a disability and 'needing' these devices. This is a unique, well-researched account that will help anyone - disabled or not - deal with the physical and emotional aspects of adjusting to a life with assistive technology.

Assistive technology has radically changed the lives of persons with disabilities, enabling them to work and perform in ways they might never have dreamed possible for themselves. But while these devices do improve physical capabilities, this functional gain is not synonymous with enhanced quality of life. The larger questions are too often ignored: What does the individual define as "rehabilitation success"? How does a given device contribute to fulfilling that person's needs? Are environmental factors -- from psychological resistance to insufficient training for use -- compromising the effectiveness of the device?

The advent of communication technologies and advanced intervention tools has revolutionized lives by removing barriers and expanding the scope of access even to the disabled population. These technological advancements can help in social inclusion and accessibility, and new technological interventions that are robust, multidisciplinary and flexible can resolve the problems and improve the quality of life of the disabled, physically challenged and elderly populations. However, despite this, there are not many books currently available covering these fields. As such, this text is a welcome addition, and incorporates knowledge and expertise from global professionals who have been working for years to help establish such technology. The book provides insights for budding researchers and students to explore the field further, and highlights the key challenges that need to be addressed before it is possible to fully reap the benefits from these technological interventions. It will also be useful for people working in the fields of rehabilitation and special education, as well as engineers, clinicians and industry professionals working with the disabled population.

The authors explore theoretical, empirical and moral dilemmas that arise with the changing relationship between technological change and the lives, aspirations and possibilities of disabled people. The volume is organised into three parts which consider early foundational work connecting disability and technology; key empirical studies related to the optimum use of technologies for independence and inclusion; and new moral and social dynamics thrown up by technological developments for disabled people’s lives.

Advances In Exercise And Health For People With Mobility Limitations written by David Hollar and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-10-17 with Medical categories.

The purpose of this book is to provide public health, disability, and rehabilitation professionals and practitioners evidence-based science with respect to health disparities faced by people with disabilities, especially people with mobility limitations; alternative methods of rehabilitation and exercise science for this population; assistive device technology; and, improved access to health care, employment, and social participation. According to the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR), approximately 57 million Americans live with a disability. Disability severity and types vary considerably, such that each individual with a disability faces unique physical, social, and environmental barriers in order to enjoy quality of life and full participation in society. A large research literature shows that people with disabilities face substantial employment and health disparities compared to people without disabilities. People with mobility limitations often experience secondary conditions to compound their primary disability. Hollar (2013) and Hollar and Lewis (2015) showed that people with mobility limitations were significantly more likely to experience obesity and lack of access to physical exercise. Other studies have shown that access to proper physical examination facilities and equipment remain a substantial barrier in many clinics and hospitals despite the enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act 25 years ago. Research on alternative exercise programs and new assistive device technologies offers promise to improve physical functioning and exercise for people with mobility limitations. Furthermore, increased focus on biopsychosocial over traditional medical models for disability will help policymakers and the public to recognize the complex, contextual issues (e.g., personal, social, environmental) that affect the lives of people with disabilities. Readership includes public health practitioners and educators, disability and rehabilitation researchers, clinicians and sports medicine practitioners, and disability advocates. There have been general handbooks on disability, but advances in technology and alternative exercise programs, as well as novel disability health programs, are dispersed in the research literature. This book will help to highlight these programs for health policy experts, especially given the high health and social disparities experienced by this population.
