Since the time of my adolescence, and over the span of 25 years, cell phones have evolved from heavy lunchbox-sized devices owned exclusively by business executives to devices the size of a deck of cards, weighing less than a half-pound, and available to nearly every family and individual. Just as businesses have to make adjustments when adopting new technologies, so do families and individuals. However, introducing new technology into a business organization usually includes some type of training in order for employees to understand how to make the best use of the new technology. Individuals and families who adopt new technologies, such as the cell phone, computer, or the Internet, do so without training or guidebooks on the best use of such technology. At the very best, a sparse instruction manual is included for individuals and families to learn about basic features for everyday use. It is no surprise to see so many books and articles written about how to properly use technologies and get the greatest benefit from using them.While technology devices are advertised and marketed to consumers as one-in-all solutions for many work and family related tasks, these technologies lack a guidebook explaining the effects of using such technologies for those tasks. Similar to psychotropic medication, using technology may effectively provide a solution at the expense of unwanted side-effects such as negatively impacting self-esteem, creating family conflict, and creating distance between family members. Although a cell phone can help a parent monitor their adolescent child's whereabouts, doing so may have negative developmental consequence for their adolescent. This project set out to research the effect of cell phone ownership during adolescence and discovered that adolescent cell phone communication with parents had the greatest impact on adolescent development of self-esteem, identity, and autonomy. It is my hope that this guidebook, in one form or another, makes its way into the hands of parents with adolescent children. I believe that the information presented in the guidebook will help parents better understand adolescent development and inform parents of their important role in the development of their adolescent children.
