There exists in certain religious circles the idea that criticism of Christian doctrine is an undesirable thing, because indicative of a spirit of irreverence and faithlessness that is at variance with the fundamental principles of Christianity. According to Catholic teaching, the Church is founded upon divine revelation, to doubt the reality of which is to question the truth of the Word of God. It is not to be supposed that the finite understandings of men can fathom the infinite mysteries of God. Does not the conception that it is possible for the divine truths of religion to be comprehended by means of the same evidential methods adopted in the acquisition of secular knowledge, imply a practical denial of the existence of a supreme God, since the creature would thus be made to appear as equal in wisdom and power with the Creator? Most seekers after the Word of God meet at one time or other with some such argument against the propriety of their endeavours to obtain evidence of the intrinsic truth of Christian teaching. But the charge of irreverence brought against honest inquiry is powerless to affect the belief, held by many educated men and women, that a pure desire to know and to do the will of God necessitates the exercising of intellectual as well as of spiritual faculties, in order that what is true in the teaching offered to them in the name of Christ may be separated from what is false, to the greater glory of God and to the furthering of the divine purpose of Life. Hostility towards criticism of religious doctrine appears to all impartial minds to be not only of doubtful service to the cause of Religion as a whole, but also to cast discredit on the ability of any particular creed to sustain an examination in detail of its articles. In an era when most things touching the health and general well-being of men are subjected to critical inquiry, it would be strange if their spiritual welfare should escape remark. Science has much to say about the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the habits of our daily lives; and we listen to what is said with due respect, because we know the aim of Science to be the improvement of the conditions of life through the elimination of error and harmful prejudice from the paths of progress; and because, by regulating our conduct by the reasonable principles recommended, we may contribute towards the amelioration of those conditions under which future generations of men will enter upon their inheritance of the earth. Is the authority claimed and exercised by the Church over the souls and minds of men to be unquestioned? Is the training of spiritual consciousness less important than the education and nourishment of the body? Scientific criticism may not be perfect, or its judgments infallible; but such as it is to-day, why may not its methods be applied to the elimination of falsehood and ignorance from things religious as well as from things secular? Truth is Truth, whether its unveiling to the understanding be achieved by Science or Religion. Investigation of the evidence of a supposed truth either, by certifying its verity, leads to its surer stability, with proportionate increase of honour; or, by tracing and eliminating error, gives higher value to the remaining purified residue. If the supposed teaching of Christ were found to be consistent with the modern teaching of Science, the mutual endorsement would be a further guarantee of the verity of the question in point, both in its religious and its scientific aspect. But if an examination of Christian doctrine reveals the presence of dogma utterly irreconcilable with known scientific facts, then, if the cry for Truth raised by both teachers is sincere, the rejection of that which defiles Truth is incumbent upon the disciples of Religion as well as upon those of Science.

It is surely important, therefore, that we should understand its purposes in the economy of God.There is a fourfold statement of purpose declared in the New Testament: the purpose to reveal the Father; the purpose to put away sin; the purpose to destroy the works of the devil; and the purpose to establish by another advent the Kingdom of God in the world.Christ was in conflict with all that was contrary to the purposes of God in individual, social, national, and racial life. There is a sense in which when we have said this we have stated the whole meaning of His coming. His revelation of the Father was toward this end; His putting away of sin was part of this very process; and His second advent will be for the complete and final overthrow of all the works of the devil.

The nature of the Incarnation is of supreme importance in our understanding of God's purpose in the Provision of Redemption. The Redemption in the Old Economy of the Law was principled on the Innocent for the Guilty. The blood of the innocent animal was offered upon the altar before the Lord for the remission of the sin of the guilty. This principle was based on even a greater principle, The Atoning Blood of The Son of God, The Lamb slain before the foundation of the World. The Trinity foreknew that man would have failed the TEST of Obedience in the Garden of Eden before Adam and Eve were created. However, God's foreknowledge did not prevent the creation of man. It was in Eternity The Son offered to die on man's behalf to redeem him. So on looking on the blood of the innocent animal, The Father saw the blood of His Son and thus forgave the guilty under the Law. The external consideration of the Fall did not influence God's purpose in the creation of man, neither did the Fall of Lucifer and his angels. God's purpose in creation is eternal, and external factors will never change it.Of necessity, it must be emphasized that the innocent animal, under the Law, was far inferior to the guilty sinner for whom it was offered. The Eternal Lamb was far superior to guilty man, being the Son of God, holy and separate from sin. A student of Theology may want to ask the question, Why would God go ahead and create man, knowing that he would FALL? To this , we may reply that God's eternal purpose in man's creation was far greater than man's failure in the Garden of Eden. Simply on the basis of Divine Economy, it makes eternal sense. God created a pair of people, but today there are more than 7,000,000,000 people who are the descendants of Adam and eve.The Incarnation is one of the greatest mysteries and because of its eternal purpose, the angels desire to look into it. It will be talked about throughout eternity by the saints and angels. But fundamental to and prior to the Incarnation was a great mystery. Sometime before The Son assumed human nature, He merged with the Father and became One with Him; yet maintained His personal Distinction. These Distinctions which some Theologians call Emanations, the sharing of The Father's Divine nature with The Son and The Holy Spirit, are immutable and cannot be reversed. The Theology of Immutability is not only applicable to the merging of the Son with The Father before the miraculous conception of the Virgin Mary, but it also applies to other Divine acts. Once a human being is born into the World, he will continue to exist in some form for eternity.For the sake of continuing of this line of thought, The Son was actually transported from Heaven to Earth by this miraculous act of The Holy Spirit. His earthly life then began and became subject to the biological laws of nature. Since Divinity cannot be created, neither can it be changed, The Son could see Himself when being conceived in Mary's womb. However the Babe in Mary's womb would have no human consciousness, because to be true human, one does not self-consciousness in the womb, but later after birth. Now that the great mystery of the Miraculous Conception is better explained, we are ready to consider more fully the human nature of Jesus Christ, man's Redeemer.Without the human nature of Christ, the Provision of Redemption would not be possible. Christ needed a human body to offer the Vicarious Sacrifice of himself unto The Father on man's behalf. Angels are immortal beings and could not die on behalf of mankind. In His Pre-Incarnate form, Christ could not have died. Redemption requires a blood sacrifice, The Innocent for The Guilty. Death by sin had reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned. None of Adam's descendants could die for man's Redemption. The Atoning Sacrifice had to be sinless. By the Virgin Birth or the Miraculous Conception of Mary, a sinless and holy human body was provided for The Son of God.
