The Swiss physician and polymath Conrad Gessner (1516-1565) was one of the most prominent scientists of the early modern period and wrote numerous important works. During the last two decades were discovered nearly 400 titles from his private library. They give an interesting insight into his interests and his sources. The present book contains not only an introduction and a catalogue of these books, but also inventories of the lost works as well as the still extant and lost manuscripts possessed by Gessner. They open the door to Gessner's study and to the intellectual world of a fascinating Renaissance scholar.

Virgil And The Myth Of Venice written by Craig Kallendorf and has been published by Clarendon Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with History categories.

This book, which is the first comprehensive study of its subject, shows that the Roman poet Virgil played an unexpectedly significant role in the shaping of Renaissance Venetian culture. Drawing on reception theory and the sociology of literature, it argues that Virgil's poetry became a best-seller because it sometimes challenged, but more often confirmed, the specific moral, religious, and social values of the Venetian readers.

Excerpt from The Venetian Printing Press: An Historical Study Based Upon Documents for the Most Part Hitherto Unpublished His book consists of two parts. First, an historical study of the Venetian Printing Press from its origin down to the fall of the Republic, based, in a large degree, upon the documents which form the second part of the book. In this study I trace the history of the Venetian press from its introduction, through the sixteenth century - noting especially how press legislation grew up, preceded by custom and practice, and then formulated in law; how the government dealt with such questions as copyright, protection, and censorship; how the Guild of Printers and Booksellers was founded and governed; how the book trade came under the in uence of the Index and the Inquisitorial censorship, and how the Republic endeavoured to protect the trade, thereby involving itself in a long struggle with the Church of Rome - till we reach the slow decline of the Venetian press through the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, in spite of the legis lation which was designed to preserve it. I have called the work a study, rather than a history of the Venetian press, because I feel that a true history of that press would require far more bibliographical knowledge than I possess. This book will have fulfilled its purpose if it serves as a pioneer along a line of research which has never been adequately explored, except at its beginning, and then almost entirely from a bibliographical, not from an historical or legal point of View. The second part of the book contains the documents which served as a basis for the study. By far the larger part are published now for the first time. In some cases I have reprinted documents which have already seen the light, because 1 know that they are difficult of access to English students. These documents fall into several groups. Censorship The Control Of Print written by Robin Myers and has been published by Oak Knoll Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992 with Business & Economics categories.

The medium of print has always been identified as a crucial element in the exercise of power. Since the invention of printing a combination of interests - political, religious and cultural - have borne down on the Press in an attempt to shape and contain its output. Each stage of the production and distribution of printed material can be seen as a battlefield of competing ideologies, whether organized through such institutions as the Stationers' Company, Parliament, and the lending library, or represented by broad divisions within society at large. In this collection of essays leading scholars investigate the interaction between authors, publishers, booksellers, readers and regulatory bodies in England and France across three centuries, and show the key role that the book trade - resisting or adapting to external pressure - has played in defining what is permissible to publish. - See more at: http://www.oakknoll.com/pages/books/37463/robin-myers-michael-harris/censorship-and-the-control-of-print-in-england-and-france-1600-1910#sthash.LH8UYKGk.dpuf -- Publisher's website.

The History Of The Jews In Early Modern Italy written by Marina Caffiero and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-05-05 with History categories.

Challenging traditional historiographical approaches, this book offers a new history of Italian Jews in the early modern age. The fortunes of the Jewish communities of Italy in their various aspects – demographic, social, economic, cultural, and religious – can only be understood if these communities are integrated into the picture of a broader European, or better still, global system of Jewish communities and populations; and, that this history should be analyzed from within the dense web of relationships with the non-Jewish surroundings that enveloped the Italian communities. The book presents new approaches on such essential issues as ghettoization, antisemitism, the Inquisition, the history of conversion, and Jewish-Christian relations. It sheds light on the autonomous culture of the Jews in Italy, focusing on case studies of intellectual and cultural life using a micro-historical perspective. This book was first published in Italy in 2014 by one of the leading scholars on Italian Jewish history. This book will appeal to students and scholars alike studying and researching Jewish history, early modern Italy, early modern Jewish and Italian culture, and early modern society.
