Excerpt from The Indian Tribes of North America From the date of its first appearance in 1891 the Powell map of Linguistic Families of American Indians North of Mexico has proved of the widest utility. It has been reissued several times and copied into numerous publications. There has, however, been almost equal need of a map giving the location of the tribes under the several families. To one familiar from his readings in early American history with the names and locations of our prominent eastern tribes, such as the Delaware, Iroquois, Cherokee, and Choctaw, the preparation of a tribal map would seem to be simple, and it would indeed be so if all Indians had been grouped into bodies as clearly marked as those mentioned. But even in the eastern United States the term tribe is quickly found to have no uniform application. The Creeks were a confederation of a few dominant tribes and a number of subordinate bodies, each formerly independent. The name Delaware is com mouly said to have covered three tribes or subtribes, but while two of these seem never to have been independent of each other, the third, the Munsee, is often treated as if it were entirely separate. The name Powhatan was applied to about 30 tribes or subtribes which had been brought together by conquest only a few years before Virginia was settled, and the term Chippewa, or Ojibwa, is used for a multitude of small bands with little claim to any sort of governmental unity. In the case of the Iroquois, on the other hand, the tribe was only a part of the governmental unit, the Iroquois Confederation, or Longhouse. The northern Plains tribes present a certain coherence but farther south and west our difficulties multiply. An early explorer in Texas states that in that region, by nation was to be understood only a single town or perhaps a few neighboring villages, and in fact the number of tribal names reported from this section seems almost endless. In the governmental sense, each Pueblo community was a tribe, and if we were to attempt a complete list we should have in the first place a large number of existing, or at least recently existing. Excerpt from Origin and Traditional History of the Wyandotts, and Sketches of Other Indian Tribes of North America Ask the red man, in his primeval nature, to what part of the world (besides this continent), can he trace his ancestors, or whether he believes, when told by the white man, that he sprung from some of the lost or scattered tribes of Israel, and he will return you this answer: the Great and Good Spirit made us, and placed us here. To the educated Indian, this history may suddenly appear like some phantom from the past, and who may find fault with it. To such, I would say, well then, why don't you write a history of your nation, yourself? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Discourse on the Religion of the Indian Tribes of North America: Delivered Before the New-York Historical Society, December 20, 1819 The human mind derives pleasure from paradox, for the same reason that it delights in wit. Both produce new and surprising combinations of thought; and the judgment, being overpowered by the fervours of imagination, becomes for a time insensible to their extravagance. Excerpt from The Indian Races of North and South America In describing the adventures and proceedings of the pioneers in the settlement and civilization of the Western Continent, the interesting nature of the narrative may have led the author, in some from the immediate obj ect of his attention, viz.: the manners, peculiari ties, and history of the aboriginal inhabitants. He trusts, however, that where this may appear to be the case, it will generally be found to have resulted from the inseparable manner in which the history of the natives and those who have supplanted them is interwoven. Excerpt from The Myths of the North American Indians It is, indeed, surprising how vague a picture the North American Indian presents to the minds Of most people in Europe when all that recent anthropological research has done on the subject is taken into account. As a matter of fact, few books have been published in England which furnish more than the scantiest details concerning the Red Race, and these are in general scarce, and, when obtained, Of doubtful scientific value. Excerpt from Tales of the North American Indians: And Adventures of the Early Settlers in America When America was discovered by the Europeans about three hundred years ago, it was peopled by very numerous tribes of Indians who called themselves Red men. They lived by hunting and fishing, their mode of life varying according to their situation; those who resided where game was plentiful lived entirely on 'the produce of the chase; whilst others in the neighbourhood of lakes and rivers, derived their support principally from fishing; many tribes raised small quantities of Indian corn 3 and tobacco. Excerpt from The Navajos Little Histories of North American Indians is designed to give in plain and simple form a concise and authentic history of the North American Indians by tribes. So far, most of the literature giving relia ble accounts of the life, manners, customs, habits, religion, mythology, arts, and crafts of the various Indian tribes of our country is contained chiefly in government reports and in scientific works which are either not readily accessible to the reading public, or are too scientific and technical to be enjoyable and entertaining to the average general reader. The aim, then, is a popular and reliable little history of our North American Indians which will, in a measure, satisfy the ever increasing desire on the part of Americans for a more intimate knowledge of the first of all Americans. It has not been the intention to present in this little book - the first of the series - any new facts concerning the Navajos, but rather to bring together the facts already known of the tribe.
