Excerpt from The Indian Tribes of North America From the date of its first appearance in 1891 the Powell map of Linguistic Families of American Indians North of Mexico has proved of the widest utility. It has been reissued several times and copied into numerous publications. There has, however, been almost equal need of a map giving the location of the tribes under the several families. To one familiar from his readings in early American history with the names and locations of our prominent eastern tribes, such as the Delaware, Iroquois, Cherokee, and Choctaw, the preparation of a tribal map would seem to be simple, and it would indeed be so if all Indians had been grouped into bodies as clearly marked as those mentioned. But even in the eastern United States the term tribe is quickly found to have no uniform application. The Creeks were a confederation of a few dominant tribes and a number of subordinate bodies, each formerly independent. The name Delaware is com mouly said to have covered three tribes or subtribes, but while two of these seem never to have been independent of each other, the third, the Munsee, is often treated as if it were entirely separate. The name Powhatan was applied to about 30 tribes or subtribes which had been brought together by conquest only a few years before Virginia was settled, and the term Chippewa, or Ojibwa, is used for a multitude of small bands with little claim to any sort of governmental unity. In the case of the Iroquois, on the other hand, the tribe was only a part of the governmental unit, the Iroquois Confederation, or Longhouse. The northern Plains tribes present a certain coherence but farther south and west our difficulties multiply. An early explorer in Texas states that in that region, by nation was to be understood only a single town or perhaps a few neighboring villages, and in fact the number of tribal names reported from this section seems almost endless. In the governmental sense, each Pueblo community was a tribe, and if we were to attempt a complete list we should have in the first place a large number of existing, or at least recently existing. Excerpt from Biography and History of the Indians of North America, From Its First Discovery The author is not insensible to the approbation which has been constantly bestowed upon his labors, on both sides of the Atlantic, and he would here tender his sincere gratitude in return. That approba tion, with the kind expressions of the most esteemed literary and other friends, has encouraged him to continue his labors in the same field; and he now has, in a forward state, a very comprehensive work on our Indian affairs, brought together under a more perfect system than any thing of the kind hitherto promulgated, and far more extensive. Time will determine its fate. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Native Races of North America HE name Indians, given to the native races of America, commemorates the mistaken idea of its discoverers, that they had reached the Shores of the Asiatic continent. A short account of these races, and of their character, custom, and tribal divi sions, is necessary in order to understand the long and cruel conflict between the white man and the red for the possession of the New World. Excerpt from Tales of the North American Indians: And Adventures of the Early Settlers in America When America was discovered by the Europeans about three hundred years ago, it was peopled by very numerous tribes of Indians who called themselves Red men. They lived by hunting and fishing, their mode of life varying according to their situation; those who resided where game was plentiful lived entirely on 'the produce of the chase; whilst others in the neighbourhood of lakes and rivers, derived their support principally from fishing; many tribes raised small quantities of Indian corn 3 and tobacco. Excerpt from The Myths of the North American Indians It is, indeed, surprising how vague a picture the North American Indian presents to the minds Of most people in Europe when all that recent anthropological research has done on the subject is taken into account. As a matter of fact, few books have been published in England which furnish more than the scantiest details concerning the Red Race, and these are in general scarce, and, when obtained, Of doubtful scientific value. Excerpt from The Indian Races of North and South America In describing the adventures and proceedings of the pioneers in the settlement and civilization of the Western Continent, the interesting nature of the narrative may have led the author, in some from the immediate obj ect of his attention, viz.: the manners, peculiari ties, and history of the aboriginal inhabitants. He trusts, however, that where this may appear to be the case, it will generally be found to have resulted from the inseparable manner in which the history of the natives and those who have supplanted them is interwoven.
