Peter B. Todd argues for the integration of science and religion to form a new paradigm for the third millennium. He counters both the arguments made by fundamentalist Christians against science and the rejection of religion by the New Atheists, in particular Richard Dawkins and his followers. Drawing on the work of scientists, psychologists, philosophers, and theologians, Todd challenges the materialistic reductionism of our age and offers an alternative grounded in the visionary work taking place in a wide array of disciplines. "Kudos to Peter B. Todd for this masterful contribution which will undoubtedly advance the dialogue between the scientific disciplines and theology. Drawing upon the work of scientific thinkers such as Schrodinger, Heisenberg, Huxley, Pauli, Einstein, Pribram, and Bohm on the one hand and theologians such as Teilhard de Chardin and Hans Kung on the other, Todd asserts that Dawkins' "God delusion" refers to a passe, naive conception of an anthropomorphic God who created a pre-Copernican clockwork universe. By contrast, Todd points the way to a scientifically illuminated theology. He pulls from such diverse fields as neuropsychoanalysis, quantum physics, Jungian thought, and transpersonal psychology to develop a higher-order understanding of evolution that embraces the complementarity of mind and matter and is bound by neither time nor space. It is a vision of evolution that honors consciousness, the archetypal, and the numinous as fundamental. It is difficult to do full justice to the philosophical sophistication and precision Todd brings to this subject. Readers should brace themselves for an intellectually challenging and exciting journey foreshadowing a paradigm shift in which the conceptual boundaries between science, theology, and psyche are smashed." -David Van Nuys, Ph.D., professor emeritus, Sonoma State University, and host of Shrink Rap Radio Podcast "This book is the work of a religious thinker and an experienced psychologist who has immersed himself in the writings of Carl Jung and sciences of our age. This is not a theological book; rather, it is an expression of depth psychology, of divine experience, what Todd calls an "epiphany to the human consciousness . . . a God from within evolving matter itself," where matter matters and God is an expression of the human mind. Todd helps us engage with our experience of God as the unconscious archetype. A first-class example of what Jung spent most of his life doing, namely, restoring meaning to symbols as expressions of the human condition, it is as erudite as it is joyous, in short, a work of love and purpose." -David B. Russell, Ph.D. "Science and religion are still viewed as enemies by the popular mind, but as Peter Todd eloquently shows, the gap between them is rapidly closing. Todd writes clearly and persuasively with considerable knowledge of both camps. Jung was intent on reconciling science and religion through psychology, a project which met with widespread misunderstanding. Todd throws light on this endeavor and shows us the one world that can be glimpsed beyond the separate modalities of faith and reason. The Individuation of God represents a significant cultural fusion of scientific research and religious vision." -David Tacey, Ph.D., author of How to Read Jung and Edge of the Sacred: Jung, Psyche, Earth Peter B. Todd has been a research psychologist at the Neuropsychiatric Institute Sydney, a member of the Biopsychosocial AIDS Project at the University of California, a consultant in the department of immunology at St. Vincent's Hospital, and a research coordinator at the Albion Street AIDS Clinic Sydney. His papers have appeared in the British Journal of Medical Psychology, the Griffith Review, and the interdisciplinary journal Mind and Matter. He is currently a psychoanalytic psychologist in private practice in Sydney, Australia.

Finally All About God written by James Arnold and has been published by iUniverse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-03 with Religion categories.

Jim Arnold begins his integration of science and religion by reciting how an independent voice medium brought about conversations with spirits and changed his life. He also tells of his own, single experience of being the medium. Later he had a profound mystical experience of God. He attempts biographically to establish his personal credibility. He sees Moses as a voice medium and explains how a Judean academy voided this and substituted its own tribal-god concept in the biblical books attributed to be authentic Moses. This Judean make-believe but enticing concept of God needs to be expunged from today's religion. Instead Jim presents a panentheistic concept for God, but this requires that he show how God interfaces with life on our planet. He uses ectoplasm and glycoproteins on membranes as interfaces, the latter operating electrically using calcium ions to set membrane potentials. Lastly Jim calls for a wakeup reveille to get paranormal study into psychology and other related science departments and to get ministers, priests, and rabbis to educate their congregations on the value of a panentheistic theology. Here God is Becoming; the whole system is dynamic, and individuals are happier transforming, being anxious to develop themselves and improve their institutions.

God Freud And Religion written by Dianna T. Kenny and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-03-05 with Philosophy categories.

Choice Essential Read Did God create man or did man create God? In this book, Dianna Kenny examines religious belief through a variety of perspectives – psychoanalytic, cognitive, neuropsychological, sociological, historical and psychiatric – to provide a coherent account of why people might believe in God. She argues that psychoanalytic theory provides a fertile and creative approach to the study of religion that attempts to integrate religious belief with our innate human nature and developmental histories that have unfolded in the context of our socialization and cultural experiences. Freud argued that religion is so compelling because it solves the problems of our existence. It explains the origin of the universe, offers solace and protection from evil, and provides a blueprint about how we should live our lives, with just rewards for the righteous and due punishments for sinners and transgressors. Science, on the other hand, offers no such explanations about the universe or the meaning of our lives and no comfort for the unanswered longings of the human race. Is religion a form of wish-fulfilment, a collective delusion to which we cling as we try to fathom our place and purpose in the drama of cosmology? Can there be morality without faith? Are science and religion radically incompatible? What are the roots of fundamentalism and terror theology? These are some of the questions addressed in God, Freud and Religion, a book that will be of interest to psychoanalysts, psychologists and psychotherapists, students of psychology, psychoanalysis, philosophy and theology and all those with an interest in religion and human behaviour. Dianna Kenny is Professor of Psychology at the University of Sydney, Australia. She is the author of over 200 publications, including six books.

Science Religion And Deep Time written by Lowell Gustafson and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-07-05 with History categories.

This book examines the meaning of religion within the scientific, evidence-based history of our known past since the big bang. While our current major religions are only centuries or millennia old, our volume discusses the origins and development of human religious practice and belief over our species’ existence of 300,000 years. The volume also connects the scientific approach to natural and social history with ancient truths of our religious ancestors using new lines of inquiry, new technologies, new modes of expression, and new concepts. It brings together insights of natural scientists, social scientists, philosophers, writers, and theologians to discuss narratives of the universe. The essays discuss that to apprehend religion scientifically, or to interpret and explain science theologically, the subject must be examined through a variety of disciplinary lenses simultaneously and raise several theoretical, philosophical, and moral problems. With a singular investigation into the meaning of religion in the context of the 13.8 billion-year history of our universe, this book will be indispensable for scholars and students of religious studies, big history, sociology and social anthropology, philosophy, and science and technology studies.

This collection of essays is a fitting tribute to Denis Edwards, who was one of Australia's leading theologians. In exploring the most challenging questions of our time, these essays canvas some of the great themes of Christian theology that were the focus of Edwards research. Denis Edwards was a theologian of dialogue: dialogue with our rich theological tradition, dialogue with science, dialogue with contemporary theologians. The contributors to this volume enter into a dialogue with substantial parts of the theological output of Denis Edwards. In the process, they capture something of his humanity, his love of creation, and his concern for our common home. The book demonstrates the commitment Denis Edwards had to a theology that is truly ecumenical and always learning from the insights of others. The editors and authors have done a great service in helping many others to deepen reflection on Denis Edwards' contribution to our understanding of God and the natural world.

Faith Science And Understanding written by John Polkinghorne and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-10-01 with Religion categories.

divdivIn this captivating book, one of the most highly regarded scientist-theologians of our time explores aspects of the interaction of science and theology. John Polkinghorne defends the place of theology in the university (it is part of the human search for truth) and discusses the role of revelation in religion (it is a record of experience and not the communication of unchallengeable propositions). Throughout his thought-provoking conversation, Polkinghorne speaks with an honesty and openness that derives from his many years of experience in scientific research. A central concern of Polkinghorne’s collection of writings is to reconcile what science can say about the processes of the universe with theology’s belief in a God active within creation. The author examines two related concepts in depth. The first is the divine self-limitation involved in creation that leads to an important reappraisal of the traditional claim that God does not act as a cause among causes. The other is the nature of time and God’s involvement with it, an issue that Polkinghorne shows can link metascience and theological understandings. In the final section of the book, the author reviews three centuries of the science and theology debate and assesses the work of major contemporary contributors to the discussion: Wolfhart Pannenberg, Thomas Torrance, and Paul Davies. He also considers why the science-theology discussion has for several centuries been a particular preoccupation of the English. /DIV/DIV

No religion that claims to be relevant in today's world can ignore the truths that science teaches us. Nor can it ignore the spiritual values and teachings of past generations. The deep religious heritage of humanity is like a pirate's buried treasure chest. The ancient chest decays into rotten wood and rusty iron, but the precious jewels inside remain as fresh as the day they were buried. They need only to be reclaimed and then placed in a fresh container. The same is true for our religious heritage. Religion today is undergoing a radical transformation that is affecting all aspects of our lives. This book presents a synthesis between traditional values and our changing understanding of the universe. We live in an age of science and technology that profoundly affects the way we see things. God, Science and the Universe presents the outline for a new faith grounded in the natural world.

This book argues that God can be found within the edifice of the scientific understanding of physics, cosmology, biology and philosophy. It is a rewarding read that asks the Big Questions which humans have pondered since the dawn of the modern human mind, including: Why and how does the universe exist? From where do the laws of physics come? How did life and mind arise from inanimate matter on Earth? Science and religion have a common interest in the answers to such questions, yet many scientists and believers have been at odds for centuries. The author and contributors present a program for moving beyond the vastly different perspectives of reality offered by science and religion. Historical proofs for the existence of God are considered in light of the possibility that the universe may be only one in an eternal multiverse that contains an infinite number of other universes. Readers will find a modification of St. Augustine’s Argument from Truth for the existence of the necessary, self-sufficient being commonly referred to as God. This book is suited to all with an interest in the crossing points of science and religion, providing much food for thought and reflection. If in the end, you cannot accede to philosophy’s proofs, or theism’s invitation to faith, perhaps you will nevertheless say ‘yes’ to the amazing universe in which we live.
