Providing important sociological insight into the dynamics of migration the essays in this collection focus on issues associated with migration for work both in and from the Asian region. With contributions from an international team of well-known scholars, the text sets labor migration firmly within the context of globalization, providing a focused, contemporary discussion of what is undoubtedly a major twenty-first century concern. The first of its kind to look at the non-professionals who make up the vast majority of migrant workers in the region, the book analyses workers motivations and rationalities, highlighting the similarities of migration experiences throughout Asia. Presenting in-depth case studies of the real-life experiences and problems faced by migrant workers, the book discusses migrants relations with the state and their vulnerability to exploitation, as well as the major policy issues now facing governments, employers, NGOs and international agencies

Condemned Communities Forced Evictions In Jakarta written by and has been published by Human Rights Watch this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Eminent domain categories.

Every year, Jakarta's security forces demolish the homes of thousands of people and destroy the residents' personal property. These evictions are carried out with little notice, due process, or compensation. Far too often, the process involves excessive use of force against those facing eviction. Many thousands more of Jakarta's poor live in fear that one day the bulldozers will arrive at their community. Forced evictions--the removal of people against their will from the homes and land they occupy, without access to legal and other protections--deprive individuals of some of their most fundamental human rights and needs: adequate housing and protection of their homes. Based on more than one hundred interviews, Condemned Communities documents the human rights consequences of evictions being carried out by the Jakarta regional government. In some cases the land is being claimed for infrastructure projects, while in other instances the government attempts to justify the forced evictions in the name of public order and removing trespassers. Yet many of the condemned communities have lived on the land for years or even generations. Many evictions can be seen as part of a wider government pattern to intimidate the urban poor and deter urban migration. This report illustrates that, far from improving the quality of life in Jakarta, the forced eviction of communities succeeds only in moving the problem to other parts of the city at great human cost.

This handbook focuses on the practices, initiatives, and innovations of urban planning in response to the rapid urbanisation in Indonesian cities. The book provides rigorous evidence of planning Indonesian cities of different sizes. Indonesia, the world’s fourth most populous country, is increasingly urbanising. Through the lens of the Sustainable Development Goals, chapters examine specific policies and projects and analyse 19 cities, ranging from a megacity of over ten million residents to metropolitan cities, large cities, medium cities, and small cities in Indonesia. The handbook provides a diverse view of urban conditions in the country. Discussing current trends and challenges in urban planning and development in Indonesia, it covers a wide range of topics organised into five main themes: Indonesian planning context; informality, insurgency, and social inclusion; design, spatial, and economic practices; creative and innovative practices; and urban sustainability and resilience. Written by 64 established and emerging scholars from Indonesia and overseas, this handbook is an invaluable resource to academics working on Urban Studies, Development Studies, Asian and Southeast Studies as well as to policy-makers in Indonesia and in other cities of the Global South.

This book analyses and compares the development paths of five major cities in East and Southeast Asia since the early 1960s, including Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta, Manila, Seoul, and Shanghai. In examining these five cases through a carefully crafted conceptual framework, the author excavates an understanding of the dynamics that have enabled Seoul and Shanghai to become highly competitive as major engines of economic growth, while simultaneously accounting for why the other three cities have faced numerous problems in terms of meeting their development goals. Presenting both quantitative and qualitative data to trace the course of changes between 1960 and 2015, the case studies curate six possible explanations for the different cities’ developmental trajectories. The book considers the national development strategy matters to the development of cities and positions the share of budget revenue retained for cities’ expenditure as critical. The author demonstrates that consistently pursuing long-term strategies is important, and that public entrepreneurship with powerful supporting coalitions is vital. The book illustrates how master plans have played limited roles in the building of cities, and that fragmented governments are often at the root of the problems facing a city’s development. This book will be highly relevant to researchers in international and Asian urban development.

In 1999, the people of Indonesia's Riau Archipelago were angry. Resentful of decades of "internal colonialism" by Mainland Sumatra, and concerned that they lacked the education and skills to flourish in a globalised world, they dreamed of inhabiting a province of their own. When the post-authoritarian state committed itself to democracy and local autonomy, they lobbied vigorously and successfully for the region to be returned to its "native" Malay residents. Riau Islands Province was born in 2004. This book explores what happened next.
