This book studies the current paradox within the voting literature on campaign contributions and legislative voting behavior. Specifically, while journalists and observers believe that the contributions significantly influence congressional votes, empirical evidence compiled by political scientists has generally failed to identify a systematic linkage between the two. At the same time, the amount of money contributed by interest groups is increasing and polls indicate that the public is becoming more cynical about the process.

"Too Much Money Is Not Enough" is about special influence in politics in Texas. It has two parts: commentary and interviews of former Texas legislators. The commentary describes the state's poorly regulated and rarely enforced campaign finance system and the concentration of power in the hands of a few wealthy contributors. The interviews present a colorful and candid inside look of the influence of contributions on the state's legislature.

Money, Politics, and Campaign Finance Reform Law in the States presents an exciting examination of campaign finance reform and the role of money in state politics through the 2000 elections. Written by leading scholars on state politics and campaign finance reform, this book is the first to provide in-depth case studies that describe the reality of the impact money has on state politics; what efforts have been undertaken to regulate this money; and how successful the law has been in ensuring fair elections. Americans are deeply concerned about the role and impact of money upon politics and government. While numerous publications have documented Congressional efforts to enact campaign finance reform, this book puts the spotlight on state efforts to address the impact of money on politics. Money, Politics, and Campaign Finance Reform Law in the States offers the most comprehensive and up-to-date analysis of money and campaign finance reform at the state level on the market. Its findings will be invaluable to scholars, lawyers, legislators, and activists involved with campaign finance reform. "This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the direction of politics in Illinois and in other states." -- Illinois Issues, November 2002 "Schultz does an excellent job in the introductory chapter of explaining the four preeminent Supreme Court decisions that frame the current debate on campaign finance reform at the federal and state level... This book will be of interest to students not just of money and campaign finance reform, but also to those interested in state politics, interest groups, and political parties." -- Election Law Journal, 2003 "[T]his book makes an important -- perhaps even unique -- contribution to an area of study that has received much less attention than the federal system." -- Guardian (COGEL), Spring 2004

Improper Influence written by Thomas L. Gais and has been published by University of Michigan Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-08-27 with Political Science categories.

Why is there still so much dissatisfaction with the role of special interest groups in financing American election campaigns, even though no aspect of interest group politics has been so thoroughly regu-lated and constrained? This book argues that part of the answer lies in the laws themselves, which prevent many hard-to-organize citizen groups from forming effective political action committees (PACs), while actually helping business groups organize PACs. Thomas L. Gais points out that many laws that regulate group involvement in elections ignore the real difficulties of political mobilization, and he concludes that PACs and the campaign finance laws reflect a fundamental discrepancy between grassroots ideals and the ways in which broadly based groups actually get organized. ". . . . of fundamental scholarly and practical importance. The implications for 'reform' are controversial, flatly contradicting other recent reform proposals . . . . I fully expect that Improper Influence will be one of the most significant books on campaign finance to be published in the 1990s." --Michael Munger, Public Choice "It is rare to find a book that affords a truly fresh perspective on the role of special interest groups in the financing of U.S. elections. It is also uncommon to find a theoretically rigorous essay confronting a topic usually grounded in empirical terms. . . . Improper Influence scores high on both counts and deserves close attention from students of collective action, campaign finance law, and the U.S. political process more generally." --American Political Science Review Thomas L. Gais is Senior Fellow, The Nelson A. Rockefeller Institute of Government, State University of New York.

The Right of Instruction and Representation in American Legislatures, 1778 to 1900 provides a comprehensive analysis of the role constituent instructions played in American politics for more than a hundred years after its founding. Constituent instructions were more widely issued than previously thought, and members of state legislatures and Congress were more likely to obey them than political scientists and historians have assumed. Peverill Squire expands our understanding of constituent instructions beyond a handful of high-profile cases, through analyses of two unique data sets: one examining more than 5,000 actionable communications (instructions and requests) sent to state legislators by constituents through town meetings, mass meetings, and local representative bodies; the other examines more than 6,600 actionable communications directed by state legislatures to their state’s congressional delegations. He draws the data, examples, and quotes almost entirely from original sources, including government documents such as legislative journals, session laws, town and county records, and newspaper stories, as well as diaries, memoirs, and other contemporary sources. Squire also includes instructions to and from Confederate state legislatures in both data sets. In every respect, the Confederate state legislatures mirrored the legislatures that preceded and followed them.
