Excerpt from Christianity and Its Influence Some young men, and some who are not young, think it smart to laugh at religion in general, or at some of its doctrines; and this without having studied the subject in (if at all) more than a very partial and superficial manner. Itrust that there are no such mockers among you. Such mockery, permit me to say, is rude and foolish conceit on the part of any young people who indulge in it, considering that the subject is of transcendent importance, that the religion of Jesus is and always has been very dear to multitudes of the best people everywhere, and that a great host of men of high intellect and great learning have in all ages believed in it. Excerpt from The Influence of the Bible on Civilisation One of the greatest questions of our day is how modern civilisation and Christianity can go on in harmony. One can approach this question by sev eral ways, but historical investigation has always proved to be the surest. The author has in mind to write in German a full History of the Bible, when time will allow. Meanwhile this brief sketch may prove useful. Readers who look for references will find most of them in an article contributed by the present writer to Dr. J. Hastings's Encyclo paedia of Religion and Ethics, vol. II, on The Bible in the Christian Church. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Influence of Christianity on the Vocabulary of Old English Poetry It seems that about the time of the arrival Of the Roman missionaries the polytheistic religion had begun to lose its hold upon the thinking men Of at least some Of the tribes. The circumstances surrounding the con version Of Northumbria suggest that the Old religion no longer satisfied their needs, a fact plainly apparent from the speeches of Coifi and one Of the chief councilors. The rapidity with which Christianity was adopted would point in the same direction.8 Contact with Christian ideas had begun to undermine the Old paganism and to hasten the process of degeneration. Excerpt from Christianity and the American Commonwealth: Or the Influence of Christianity in Making This Nation On June 4, 1897, the Board of Trustees of Emory College, Oxford, Ga., received the following communication from Rev. W. F. Quillian: To the Board of Trustees of Emory College. Desiring to promote the cause of Christian education and to advance the theological literature of Methodism, and believing that I can most effectively do this by laying the foundation of a lectureship at the college of my Church, located at Oxford, Ga., I give to Emory College fifty shares of $10 each, of the capital stock of the "Country Bank Stock Security Company" (estimated to be worth $550, the amount I paid for same), to be held or sold and reinvested by the Board of Trustees, for the purpose of founding a lectureship on the following conditions and plan: 1. This sum, together with any other amounts which may be given by myself or others for this purpose, shall be safely invested, and the interest added to the principal until the sum of $3,000 shall have been reached. But one course of the lectures may be provided for at an earlier date by special donation, provided no part of the principal of this fund shall be thus used. 2. Thereafter the interest, together with any appropriations made to this fund from other sources, shall be used for the maintenance of a lectureship in Emory College. Excerpt from Lectures on the Influence of the Institutions: Thought and Culture of Rome; On Christianity and the Development of the Catholic Church The "Hibbert Lectures" have been instituted for the purpose of providing a series of Lessons on the most important chapters of the History of Religion. It is in this connection that M. Max Muller has treated of the general development of religion in India, that M. Le Page Renouf has spoken of the religious function of Egypt. They form in some sort a Chair of the Comparative History of Religion, but a Chair which is occupied every year by a new Professor, who speaks only of that which he has made the subject of special study. I therefore felt myself deeply honoured when the Trustees of this useful Institution invited me to continue a teaching so worthily begun. I had long desired to see England, and to clasp the hand of my many English friends. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
