Excerpt from The Influence of Greek Philosophy on English Poetry: The Chancellor's Essay Of all the forces that may influence poetry that of a past philosophy is the most difficult to estimate. The influence of metrical tradition, of native or foreign literary forms, of the great classics of the past, is comparatively easy to discern. It is somewhat harder to trace the effects of that intangible entity called "contemporary taste": but poetry is the creator as well as the creature of taste, and a broad survey of a whole period's literature will reveal the one in the other. But the influence of philosophy is generically different; it is a question, so to say, for the metaphysics rather than the physics of poetry. To estimate it adequately we have to regard poetry itself from the philosophical standpoint: we have to consider it no longer as a traditional form of artistic exercise, but rather as a means by which man expresses his feelings towards the deeper realities. Poetry, religion and philosophy all deal in part with the supersensible or supernatural - with something beyond the ordinary world as revealed to the first consciousness. It is this element which makes a poetic description differ from a literal reproduction, or a picture from a photograph. Hence, to relate poetry to philosophy we have to regard both as functions of that thought or spirit in man, which reaches beyond the sensible and material world to a deeper reality underlying it. It is this which makes it difficult to estimate the influence of the philosophy of one age and nation on the poetry of another: for this thought or spirit in its manifestations eludes local and temporal limitations; indeed the categories of material science are altogether inapplicable to it. PIERIDES III, Editors: Myrto Garani and David Konstan Despite the Romans' reputation for being disdainful of abstract speculation, Latin poetry from its very beginning was deeply permeated by Greek philosophy. Philosophical elements and commonplaces have been identified and appreciated in a wide range of writers, but the extent of the Greek philosophical influence, and in particular the impact of Pythagorean, Empedoclean, Epicurean and Stoic doctrines, on Latin verse has never been fully in...

Not illustrated. 1910 edition. Excerpt: ... lecture ii Introduction Of Greek Into England The year 322 B.C., the year in which Aristotle and Demosthenes died, may be said to mark the time at which the great original work of Greece had been done. Much valuable and memorable work had still to be produced--the best poetry of the Alexandrian School, the history of Polybius, the biographies of Plutarch, the dialogues of Lucian, the treatise attributed to Longinus, and this would bring us to the middle of the third century A.d.--but all the great original work had been completed by B.C. 322. The Old Literature may be said to have terminated when Justinian closed the schools of pagan philosophy in A.D. 529. Between that event and the capture of Constantinople by the Turks in 1453 stretched a long dreary period filled by ecclesiastical homilies and dissertations, compilations and commentaries and criticisms on the Old Classics, and wretched poems written in what were called mxot iroXvriKot or verses framed according to rhythm and not quantity, and side by side with these, histories and poems modelled on the style of the Old Classics: a literature represented in a word by the later Byzantine historians and poets. You may read about them in the Dissertation in Berington's ' Literary History of the Middle Ages, ' in Donaldson's continuation of Muller's 'History of Greek Literature, ' and in the pages of Gibbon. After 1453 the language, long wretchedly corrupted, passed entirely into Romaic, and the Romaic Literature has of course gone on in unbroken continuity to the present day. The three principal causes that disseminated Greek were: --1. The conquests of Alexander the Great and the breaking up of his empire into various principalities, the three chief kingdoms being Macedonia, Asia, Egypt.

The Philosopher S Song written by Kevin Crotty and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Literary Criticism categories.

The Philosopher's Song is a full-length treatment of Plato and the dynamic course of his philosophical thought, regarded from a distinctly poetic point of view. Kevin Crotty demonstrates how Plato's invention of philosophy needs to be situated within the context of a society where poets were cultural authorities, whose teachings emphasized such tragic themes as the instability of things and the indeterminacy of moral terms. The interest of Plato's philosophy lies to a great extent in the compelling interest of what he sought to repress-the poetic and political heritage of a world tragically conceived. Plato's attacks on the poets are notorious. Despite his apparently frank hostility, however, his relation to the poets was exceedingly complex, argues Crotty. Even the banishment of the poets in the Republic turns out to be, more deeply, a recruitment of mimetic poetry for Plato's metaphysics. Once endowed with a metaphysical significance, however, the poets posed a serious challenge to Platonic idealism, and spurred Plato to revise considerably his metaphysical scheme. Crotty ultimately concludes that the views of politics and ethics in Plato's later works return in many ways to the insights of the poets.
