The Inner Life reflects upon the Christian principle of the soul and nourishing one's spiritual essence, as viewed from the Quaker perspective of Rufus M. Jones. Populating this treatise with a variety of sources and inspirations, Rufus M. Jones advances the view that Christians may seek and find the very core of God's strength laying within themselves. To illustrate this central point, he examines the life of Jesus Christ, plus various prophets and sainted figures who achieved closeness to God through inner contemplation of the divine present within and around all of humanity. With occasional recourse to poetic passages, Jones delves through the Bible, quoting parts which allude to the concept of the inner life. Both the Old and New Testament texts feature, while modern works of scholarship by authors such as Percy Gardner also receive discussion. Such scrutiny culminates in the book's final chapter, which attempts to answer how all of these religious experiences shed light onto God and the nature of the divine. Not content with merely quoting or discussing the theory of the inner life, Jones offers the reader practical steps to cultivate their own spiritual growth. Prayer is foremost among his methods, but he is also careful to acknowledge the 'mystery of goodness' - the process whereby a person spurns the powerful force of selfishness to live a truly altruistic life. Being mindful of Christ's deeds and words, and the principles of the Holy Spirit, are vital in achieving a lasting and meaningful inner growth.

Excerpt from The Inner Chamber and the Inner Life How the Church of Christ, and the spiritual life of thousands of its members, suffers from the root disease; the neglect of secret intercourse with God. It is the lack of secret prayer, the neglect of the maintenance of that hidden life rooted in Christ, rooted and grounded in love, that explains the feebleness of the Christian life to resist the world, and its failure to bring forth fruit abundantly. Nothing can change this but the restoration, in the life of the believer, of the inner chamber to the place which Christ meant it to have. As Christians learn, instead of trusting their own efforts, what it is daily to strike their roots deeper into Christ, and to make the secret personal fellowship with God their chief care, true godliness will flourish. If the root be holy, so are the branches. If the morning hour be holy to the Lord, the day with its duties will be so too. If the root be healthy, so are the branches. Excerpt from The Inner Life of the Christian Rev. Frederick Augustus Rauch, born in Kirchbracht, Hesse Darmstadt, July 27th, 1806, was a graduate of the University of Marburg; subsequently he prosecuted the study of Philosophy and Theology in Giessen and Heidelberg, and was then appointed Professor of Philosophy successively in these two celebrated Universities. Becoming obnoxious to Government by the expression of rather liberal political sentiments, he emigrated to America in 1831, and spent nearly a year in Easton, Pennsylvania, where he was elected Professor of the German Language in Lafayette College. In the fall of 1832, he was elected Principal of a Classical School, located at York, Pa., and filled the office for three years with superior ability and great success. In 1835, the School was removed to Mercersburg, and converted into a college by a charter from the Legislature of the State, under the name and title of Marshall College. Dr. Rauch was chosen President. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
