Geiger's business is extracting information. A meticulous torturer, his methods range from the brutal to the psychologically complex, and he will stop at nothing to get the job done. His clients are referred to him from international corporations, government agencies and organised crime; his skills are in worldwide demand. He calls his company Information Retrieval. Geiger only has one rule: that he will never work on a child. So when a client presents Geiger with a twelve-year-old boy, his instinct is to walk away. But the alternative - the unknown horror that might await the boy elsewhere - is too awful for him to contemplate. Geiger's history is a blank page - even to him. The Inquisitor is a taut, muscled novel which reveals, with painful honesty, the search for male identity, native Indian identity, and American identity. It shows us ourselves, and the mirror is not flattering. It exposes the process of moral corruption in bureaucracies and individuals. It tears the veil off the American soul and exposes it in a harsh flurorescent glare, in the blue light of the TV screen. It is a atory of how we all, native Indians and other Americans, may be exiled from our deepest selves. We may well see our own darkest fears and fantasies in this novel.

Early modern Venice was an exceptional city. Located at the intersection of trade routes and cultural borders, it teemed with visitors, traders, refugees and intellectuals. It is perhaps unsurprising, then, that such a city should foster groups and individuals of unorthodox beliefs, whose views and life styles would bring them into conflict with the secular and religious authorities. Drawing on a vast store of primary sources - particularly those of the Inquisition - this book recreates the social fabric of Venice between 1640 and 1740. It brings back to life a wealth of minor figures who inhabited the city, and fostered ideas of dissent, unbelief and atheism in the teeth of the Counter-Reformation. The book vividly paints a scene filled with craftsmen, friars and priests, booksellers, apothecaries and barbers, bustling about the city spaces of sociability, between coffee-houses and workshops, apothecaries' and barbers' shops, from the pulpit and drawing rooms, or simply publicly speaking about their ideas. To give depth to the cases identified, the author overlays a number of contextual themes, such as the survival of Protestant (or crypto-Protestant) doctrines, the political situation at any given time, and the networks of dissenting groups that flourished within the city, such as the 'free metaphysicists' who gathered in the premises of the hatter Bortolo Zorzi. In so doing this rich and thought provoking book provides a systematic overview of how Venetian ecclesiastical institutions dealt with the sheer diffusion of heterodox and atheistical ideas at different social levels. It will be of interest not only to scholars of Venice, but all those with an interest in the intellectual, cultural and religious history of early-modern Europe.

Set in Mexico City in 1649, when the Spanish Inquisition holds sway, TheInquisitor’s Diary takes the form of the diary of Fray Alonso, the most zealous advocate of their mission, as he struggles to win promotion in the church. Outmaneuvered by his rivals, he is dispatched on a seemingly futile journey to the north, where he unexpectedly befriends a captured heretic—a Marrano, or crypto-Jew—and finds himself questioning all he believes in. Thought-provoking and philosophical, this novel brings the Inquisition to troubling life, with all its moral darkness and complexity. “We follow Alonso’s journey as he is dispatched by the Inquisitor General to the country’s northern frontier to root out ‘heresy, apostasy, backsliding.’ . . . This somber work seeks to uncover those subterranean impulses that surge beneath Alonso’s fate.”—Literary Review

I hereby record those events which took place in and around the city of Lazet relating to the assassination of our venerable Brother Augustin Duese in the year of the Incarnate Word, 1318. So writes Brother Bernard, an Inquisitor of Heretical Depravity, following the discovery of his superior's dismembered corpse. At a time when heresy is a heinous offence, routed out with ruthless determination, Brother Bernard is accustomed to dispensing harsh justice. But as he attempts to make sense of this shocking crime, he himself becomes an object of persecution-thanks to his passionate involvement with a mysterious suspect and her beautiful daughter. Pursued as a heretic, implicated as a murderer, Bernard must now face his accusers. To fail such a task, in fourteenth century France, means certain death. Catherine Jinks has crafted a magnificent tale of murder, forbidden lust and betrayal.

“The Inquisitor,” was written in May, 1956 for William Hamling's IMAGINATION magazine, as Robert Silverberg writes in his lengthly introduction, "a few weeks before my graduation from Columbia, and put my own byline on it, but when Hamling published it in the December, 1956 issue of IMAGINATION it was credited to Randall Garrett, and so it has remained in bibliographies to this day. It’s my work, though: a compact synthesis, in 2500 words, of the themes of Arthur Koestler’s Darkness at Noon and Franz Kafka’s “In the Penal Colony,” two classic works of fiction that would have been very much on my mind as I rounded out my days as a literature major at Columbia."
