Excerpt from The Instigator Whence they come, whither they disappear when the Commissioners of Sewers have made their mean trade as dead for the day as the occupation of Othello, is one of the secrets of a city which is all secrets. Ninety-nine times in a hundred the harvest of the human grub is rubbish, but once in a while the unexpected happens to verify the law of averages. It was happening now; and here, in this boxed accumulation of filth and garbage, were all the potential germs of grim mystery.' Excerpt from Shakespeare, the World's Greatest Psychist All Shakespeare's ghosts had met with violent deaths. These are almost the only spirits who have a motive strong enough to hold them near the earth. When Banquo was being murdered he knew that Macbeth was the instigator of the crime. Hence, his exclamation to his son: Oh, treachery! Fly, good Fleance, fly! Thou may'st revenge! And it was the strength of this im pression of his former friend's treachery that car ried his new-born spirit into Macbeth 's presence. The practice of administering poison to the most valuable slaves on an estate, as well as to the cattle, is not uncommon, and the punishment which succeeds is often terribly cruel. The suspected are not un frequently tortured to extort confession. Cases Of this kind fell, most painfully, under my own Observation. Excerpt from Studies and Memories This country has to thank you and a friend of yours for a phrase which, conceived in merriment, has the ring of a very vital truth. If you had given it to the world before some of these papers were printed, perhaps I, in spite of my impetuous instincts, would have so far profited by it as to make this volume too small to find a publisher. As, however, you are chief instigator of their reappearance, I have a lingering hope that you are acting up to the life maxim which you formulated in the words, Wisdom while you wait.' As one of my oldest friends, I am sure that you have not advised me in the Biblical Spirit, which desires that the book should be the handiwork of an enemy. If you turn out wrong in your estimate of its value, I can only hope that it will be a lesson to you that (without your gracious permission) you are saddled, willy-nilly, with its dedication. Two decades of lockouts, soaring ticket prices, and on-ice tinkering have convinced many hard-core fans that the NHL's long-time commissioner Gary Bettman is the devil in disguise, but this book examines his motivations, peels back his often prickly demeanor, and explains how he manages to lead, confound, and keep order. It details the unlikely ascension of a fatherless Jewish kid from Long Island—who never played hockey and can barely skate—to the sport's biggest job. The seven-fold increase in gross revenue during Bettman's 20-year tenure as NHL commissioner makes him a business success story, and on his watch, professional hockey has also expanded far beyond its regional strongholds. By taming the NHL's famously fractious owners, all but busting its players' union, and enforcing a lawyerly discipline even on trash talk, Bettman has become a figure of almost unrivaled power in the business of sports, and this biography delves into how his influence shapes rival leagues in other countries, dictates the schedule of the Olympic Winter Games, and spills onto the ice itself.

Excerpt from The Crimes of Urbain Grandier and Others Karl-ludwig Sand, when he drove a poniard into the heart of Kotzebue, Councillor of the Russian Legation, so far from accomplishing anything for the cause of Young Germany, mused the greatest retrograde movement that had taken place for thirty years. Metternich and Gentz, the Emperor of Austria, the King of Prussia and the Czar, irritated not only by the murder but by the popular canonisation of the murderer as a saint, passed the Resolutions of Karlsbad. Henceforth there was exceptional legislation for the Universities, persecu tion of persons of Liberal ideas, and censorship of the press. There was no justification for this, for a revolutionary party did not exist. Sand in no way represented the Liberal youth of Germany. To convince themselves of this, the authorities had only to read his journal, in which, by the entry made on December grst, 1818, he made God not only his accomplice but the instigator of the murder he was about to commit, and the strip of paper which he left lying beside the corpse, on which was written You too may be a Christ. But the Liberal youth of Germany, then suffering from Oppression and espionage, made the mistake of putting a halo round the head of Sand. Excerpt from The African Repository, and Colonial Journal, Vol. 8: July, 1832 The position ofthe enemy was well chosen, and if properly de fended would have occasioned great loss ere we could have car ried it; the barricade was constructed of logs 15 feet in length, with the interstices filled up with smaller logs so as to be com pletely proof against innskdry - numerous loop holes were left through which they pointed their guns, and a small gun (a 3 pounder) was placed, so as to rake the approach to the town, hich, on either side for the distance of about 20 yards from the gate, was fortified by a kind of chcvaux dc frize, formed by the trunks, and branches of trees cut down and placed in the origi nal dense undergrowth, so as to render it absolutely impervious; behind this they had placed a strong force to take us in ank should we attempt to force the barricade. Immediately on dis covering their position, Capt. Johnson ordered his men to fire, which they did with such effect as to dislodge the enemy from their ambuscade in flank with the loss of several killed and wounded, while those in the barricade were so much confused by the suddenncss of the attack that they delivered their fire with uncertainty, and most of the shot passed over our heads. Our loss on this occasion, was one killed, viz. Lieut. James Thomp son, who was shot while attempting to storm the barricade, and three wounded, two slightly, and one severely. On the side of the enemy, the loss was greater, killed, and a great number wounded. Kai Pa, the instigator of the war, was wounded through the shoulder, in the very act of applying the match to the three-pounder. This was a most fortunate occurrence for us; for had he succeeded in firing the gun, few of us who were in front of the field piece would have escaped - it was loaded near ly to the muzzel with bits ofiron bolts, pot metal, &c. And pla ccd so as to rake our position; we were crowded in a space of not more than fifteen or twenty yards, wide flanked on either side by the chevaux dc fri7e, before mentioned, and distant not more than twenty-five yards from the gate, so that every shot must have told. Excerpt from The Herald of the Cross, Vol. 1: November, 1905 Christhood as recorded in such passages of St. John as were not tampered with. For when the Church succeeded in circulating such a picture as is to be found in the occult record from which the synoptics were built up, as to the life and work of Jesus, the Brotherhood felt that, whilst they must sacredly guard the innermost sense of the Mysteries, yet it might be well to tell such parts as would give to the people a truer view of the Christhood. And it was this desire which led St. John to write the Logia of Jesus. The Acts of Jesus by St. Matthew had been so misunderstood and perverted that St. John felt the necessity for giving a spiritual picture. That drawn by St. Matthew was Jesus the Christ; that presented by St. John was the Celestial Christ. The two were a brief likeness of the Divine Master. N ow, when the Church saw that the Brotherhood were determined not to divulge the inner sense of the Sacred Mystery of the Christhood, but to preserve it inviolate, the Church commenced to persecute the Brethren. It was under the leadership of him who had betrayed the Christ to the Jews, and who had prepared them to lay hold of Him, and have Him condemned to death. For, as we said in a previous issue, he was the instigator of the Church being reared in opposition to the Brotherhood. And he took care that there should not be left one stone unturned by which he might destroy that Brotherhood. For in his heart he always hated the Brethren because of their love and devotion to the Master. And he specially hated the Brethren who had been most intimate with Him. And when he saw that the Church could not destroy the in uence of the Brotherhood, he set to work in the direction of the false picture of the life and teaching of Jesus. And, as the result of his endeavours, there was compiled the strange story as told in the occult record. And when he had succeeded in doing this, the Brethren felt that the time had arrived for them to act. And, in later years, when the Brotherhood had dissolved, he succeeded in betraying one of them.
