When most people think of space, they think of physical space. However, visual space concerns space as consciously experienced, and it is studied through subjective measures, such as asking people to use numbers to estimate perceived distances, areas, angles, or volumes. This book explores the mismatch between perception and physical reality, and describes the many factors that influence the perception of space including the meaning assigned to geometric concepts like distance, the judgment methods used to report the experience, the presence or absence of cues to depth, and the orientation of a stimulus with respect to point of view. The main theme of the text is that no single geometry describes visual space, but that the geometry of visual space depends upon the stimulus conditions and mental shifts in the subjective meaning of size and distance. In addition, The Geometries of Visual Space: *contains philosophical, mathematical, and psychophysical background material; *looks at synthetic approaches to space perception including work on hyperbolic, spherical, and Euclidean geometries; *presents a meta-analysis of studies that ask observers to directly estimate size, distance, area, angle, and volume; *looks at the size constancy literature in which observers are asked to adjust a comparison stimulus to match a variety of standards at different distances away; *discusses research that takes a multi-dimensional approach toward studying visual space; and *discusses how spatial experience is influenced by memory. While this book is primarily intended for scholars in perception, mathematical psychology, and psychophysics, it will also be accessible to a wider audience since it is written at a readable level. The three-volume work Perceiving in Depth is a sequel to Binocular Vision and Stereopsis and to Seeing in Depth, both by Ian P. Howard and Brian J. Rogers. This work is much broader in scope than the previous books and includes mechanisms of depth perception by all senses, including aural, electrosensory organs, and the somatosensory system. Volume 1 reviews sensory coding, psychophysical and analytic procedures, and basic visual mechanisms. Volume 2 reviews stereoscopic vision. Volume 3 reviews all mechanisms of depth perception other than stereoscopic vision. The three volumes are extensively illustrated and referenced and provide the most detailed review of all aspects of perceiving the three-dimensional world.Volume 1 starts with a review of the history of visual science from the ancient Greeks to the early 20th century with special attention devoted to the discovery of the principles of perspective and stereoscopic vision. The first chapter also contains an account of early visual display systems, such as panoramas and peepshows, and the development of stereoscopes and stereophotography. In the fall of 1985 Carnegie Mellon University established a Department of Philosophy. The focus of the department is logic broadly conceived, philos ophy of science, in particular of the social sciences, and linguistics. To mark the inauguration of the department, a daylong celebration was held on April 5, 1986. This celebration consisted of two keynote addresses by Patrick Sup pes and Thomas Schwartz, seminars directed by members of the department, and a panel discussion on the computational model of mind moderated by Dana S. Scott. The various contributions, in modified and expanded form, are the core of this collection of essays, and they are, I believe, of more than parochial interest: they turn attention to substantive and reflective interdis ciplinary work. The collection is divided into three parts. The first part gives perspec tives (i) on general features of the interdisciplinary enterprise in philosophy (by Patrick Suppes, Thomas Schwartz, Herbert A. Simon, and Clark Gly mour), and (ii) on a particular topic that invites such interaction, namely computational models of the mind (with contributions by Gilbert Harman, John Haugeland, Jay McClelland, and Allen Newell). The second part con tains (mostly informal) reports on concrete research done within that enter prise; the research topics range from decision theory and the philosophy of economics through foundational problems in mathematics to issues in aes thetics and computational linguistics. The third part is a postscriptum by Isaac Levi, analyzing directions of (computational) work from his perspective.

Sometime in the late sixties, one of the editors of this volume realized that the mathematica psychologists in Europe-an odd lot mostly concentrated in Germany, the Netherlands, France, England and Belgium-were suffering from an acute sense of isolation. The papers that they presented at meetings of their national or regional societies had to be 'sanitized' to the point of misrepresentation. They were misunderstood. The mood was grim, depression was lurking. He decided that urgent action was required: a European gathering of mathematical psychologists was called in April 1971. Not being foolhardy, however, he took the precaution of choosing Paris as the meeting place. Around thirty mathematical psychologists received an invitation. They all came, justifying at least Paris's reputation. The meeting took place at the 'Maison des Belges' of the Cite Universitaire, Boulevard Jourdan, in front of the Parc Montsouris. As far as everyone remembers, the meeting was a full success. A happy birth had taken place. This editor then irresponsibly accepted a position in a university in the US, leaving an infant to the whims of the passers-by. Fortunately, a godfather came along. The next meeting took place in Nijmegen, in November 1971, under the loving care of Eddy Roskam. A tradition was established. The third meeting was in Oxford (1972); then in Marseilles (1973), Regensburg (1974), Stirling (1975), Stockholm (1976) . . . The infant became a toddler, then a vigorous child. This annual meeting is now an important event in the field.

This volume was designed to focus on the problems of perception and originally was to have been solely edited by Professor Hans-Lukas Teuber who was a member of the editorial board which initiated production of the Handbook. Accordingly, he issued invitations to a number of researchers III perception asking them to contribute chapters written in a style described III his words: " . . .
