A mysterious old house, an unforgettable romance and a lost granddaughter escaping to the stunning Irish coast... Lily Fleury used to love visiting her eccentric grandmother Sylvia in Ireland, taking long sunset walks on the beach and exploring the nooks and crannies of the family's old home Magnolia Manor. But when she arrives from Dublin broken-hearted, hoping to heal in Sylvia's warm embrace, she finds the once ornate Georgian house in disrepair and the gardens wildly overgrown. Sylvia has always been fiercely independent, but Lily can't believe she hasn't told anyone she's been struggling. Lily knows she can't leave until she gets Sylvia back on her feet. Although mysterious local builder Dominic agrees to help, from the moment Lily looks into his fierce green eyes they clash over how to fix the sprawling estate. It's only when she hears the soft Irish lilt of his voice as he sings in the local pub that their arguments ignite a spark of passion neither can ignore... But when Lily finds a trunk of tattered letters in the gatehouse, she discovers a devastating secret Sylvia has been hiding about Magnolia Manor. And she soon learns the real reason Dominic agreed to help out. Secret societies have had a greater impact on the history of Ireland than on that of any other country in Western Europe. The Whiteboys, Defenders, Ribbonmen and other oath-bound bodies of peasants who congregated by moonlight in secluded spots to terrorize the surrounding countryside: the politically motivated United Irishmen; the Fenian Brotherhood and the IRB (in America as well as Ireland); the ultra-extremist Invincibles; the post-treaty IRA- organizations such as these have become part of the national folklore, and their leaders are legendary figures. This book sheds new light on the mysterious origins of the societies and describes exactly how they were organized, how they operated, and to what extent they influenced their contemporaries. They also deal with important semi-secret organizations: the Orange Order in the numerous phases of its existence, the Freemasons, and the various radical movements of the inter-war years. Also discussed is the attitude of the church towards secret societies and also the counter-intelligence work of the Dublin Castle authorities and G Division. This book is the first to provide a comprehensive investigation of the internal affairs of Irish secret societies and an assessment of their role in the country's political and social development. In tracing the 200-year-old tradition of subversive activity, it reveals an entirely new 'hidden Ireland'- a submerged political culture embodying the secret aspirations of the Irish people. -- Publisher description.

From the PREFACE. A BOOK of this nature, dealing with existent organisations, inevitably labours under certain handicaps. The worst of these is, perhaps, the fact that all the counter-measures of the Intelligence Departments and Police who deal with the problems raised by these societies may not be even suggested. All that can be said is that the authorities are well informed. They will probably continue to be so, unless, at some future date, the cost of vigilance is foolishly economised. This has been done' in the past by doctrinaires in office, and to a large extent the expense and political difficulties attendant on the recent Irish Rebellion could have been obviated, had an Intelligence Department, dealing with Irish affairs, been properly maintained in the years preceding and during the Great War. Sound political intelligence, properly appreciated, would have obviated the tragic years. The problem of the Irish secret societies raises a vital question for solution by statesmen rather than by politicians. So long as there exists a powerful criminal organisation rooted in the United States, as well as in Ireland, and with ramifications all over the globe, whose avowed object is the establishment of an independent Irish Republic by methods of poUtical assassination and secret murder, then how long will any settlement of "The Irish Question" endure? The following pages will show that for centuries the peace and prosperity of Ireland have been broken by malignant and terrible secret associations of Irish people who have brought ruin and suffering on their country.

The author of Desperadoes and Cowboys and Indians directs his acid humour upon contemporary Irish life at home and abroad. The result is a headlong, love-struck, end-of-millenium, coast-to-coast tour of the frustrations, contraditions and giddying glories of being Irish in the 1990s.
