Excerpt from The Island of Cuba That portion of Baron Humboldt's Personal Narrative of his travels with Mons. Bonpland in the equinoctial regions of America, which relates to the Island of Cuba, has been published as a separate work both in the French and Spanish languages; but I believe no complete version has ever been presented in English. The following translation is from an excellent rendering of the original work into Spanish, which modestly gives only the initials of the translator; D. J. B. De V. Y. M. I have been stimulated to undertake this labor by the oft-repeated request that I would state which is the best book on Cuba, and by the fact that a long continued residence in the island, and a study of its condition and resources, have convinced me that Baron Humboldt's work is the best that has been written on the subject. In order to bring the information in this volume as nearly as possible down to the present time, I have added notes, which are placed in brackets in the body of the text, or without signature at the foot of the page, as seemed most conducive to a clear exposition of the present condition of Cuba. The notes of Baron Humboldt have the signature H. Affixed in the following pages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from History of Cuba: Or, Notes of a Traveller in the Tropics, Being a Political, Historical, and Statistical Account of the Island, From Its First Discovery to the Present Time The remarkable degree of interest expressed on all sides, at the present time, relative to the island of Cuba, has led the author of the following pages to place together in this form a series of notes from his journal, kept during a brief residence upon the island. To these he has prefixed a historical glance at the political story of Cuba, that may not be unwor thy of preservation. The fact that the subject-matter was penned in the hurry of observation upon the spot, and that it is thus a simple record of what would be most likely to engage and interest a stranger, is his excuse for the desultory character of the work. So critically is the island now situated, in a political point of view, that ere this book shall have passed through an edition, it may be no longer a dependency of Spain, or may have become the theatre of scenes to which its former convulsions shall bear no parallel. The History Of Cuba Vol 4 written by Willis Fletcher Johnson and has been published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-07-05 with categories.

The History of Cuba, vol. 4 by Willis Fletcher Johnson Cuba for Cuba must be the grateful theme of the present volume. We have seen the identification of the Queen of the Antilles with the Spanish discovery and conquest of America. We have traced the development of widespread international interests in that island, especially implicating the vital attention of at least four great powers. We have reviewed the origin and development of a peculiar relationship, frequently troubled but ultimately beneficent to both, between Cuba and the United States of America. Now, in the briefest of the four major epochs into which Cuban history is naturally divided, we shall have the welcome record of the achievement of Cuba's secure establishment among the sovereign nations of the world. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Excerpt from Slavery in the Island of Cuba: With Remarks on the Statements of the British Press Relative to the Slave Trade Having been incited by the English Press to answer certain charges utterly void of foundation, directed against the Govern ment of Spain and the Cuban authorities, I have considered it my duty to accept the challenge; but as the question of slavery and its incidents afl'ord very ample scope for discussion, I have considered that it would not be easy to develop my ideas with propriety in separate articles in the newspapers; and hence I have resolved to publish a Memoir, embracing all the requisite data for the illustration of this question in all its phases. Excerpt from Mangos of Cuba Cuba must be numbered among those tropical countries in which the mango is King of Fruits. Whether one grants that it is the finest fruit in the island - and there is no lack of Cubans who will affirm this to be a fact - one is forced to admit that it is by far the most abundant. It springs up on all sides, wherever a seed chances to fall upon favorable ground, forming a large, handsome tree which embellishes the landscape and provides in the summer months a wealth of luscious fruit.
