In Volume 2 of Columbia's comprehensive anthology of modern Japanese literature, thoughtfully selected and carefully translated readings portray the vast changes that have transformed Japanese culture since the end of the Pacific War. Beginning with the Allied Occupation in 1945 and concluding with the early twenty-first century, these stories, poems, plays, and essays reflect Japan's heady transition from poverty to prosperity, its struggle with conflicting ideologies and political beliefs, and the growing influence of popular culture on the country's artistic and intellectual traditions. Organized chronologically and by genre within each period, readings include fiction by Hayashi Fumiko and Oe Kenzaburo; poems by Ayukawa Nobuo, Katsura Nobuko, and Saito Fumi; plays by Mishima Yukio and Shimizu Kunio; and a number of essays, among them Eto Jun on Natsume Soseki and his brilliant novel Kokoro (The Heart of Things), and Kawabata Yasunari on the shape of his literary career and the enduring influence of classical Japanese literature. Some authors train a keen eye on the contemporary world, while others address the historical past and its relationship to modern culture. Some adopt an even broader scope and turn to European models for inspiration, while others look inward, exploring psychological and sexual terrain in new, often daring ways. Spanning almost six decades, this anthology provides a thorough introduction to a profound period of creative activity.

An Anthology Of Sacred Texts By And About Women written by Serinity Young and has been published by Crossroad Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993 with Religion categories.

"In 1895 Elizabeth Cady Stanton and her "Revising Committee" produced The Woman's Bible, a commentary on passages in the Bible that "do not exalt or dignify women" and "those also in which women are prominent by exclusion." The women's movement has come a long way in the last hundred years, but so too have our knowledge and appreciation of religions other than Judaism and Christianity." "Serinity Young's Anthology of Sacred Texts by and about Women is the first comprehensive comparative sourcebook on women and religion. It makes available readings by and about women from the primary texts of the world's religions. The religions treated include not only the "big seven," Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism, but the religions of northern Europe, the Ancient Near East, Greece, and Rome, shamanism and tribal religions, as well as more recent alternative religious movements. Each chapter begins with a brief introduction to the religion in question, providing a historical overview with particular regard to women. Then follow representative texts about women (each with its own introduction) from works that are central to their respective traditions. These texts include creation stories, biographies of founders (in which women often play a prominent role), law codes, folklore and fairy tales, the "texts" of tribal peoples, and works explicitly by women. Folklore and fairy tales have particular importance in this book because they generally reveal the beliefs of the "little tradition," which are often in the hands of women, while the "great tradition" is represented by the male-dominated forms of orthodoxy. The works by women here take many forms from theological treatises to mystical poems to poems mourning the loss of a child or husband to the matter-of-fact statements by tribal women, such as Nisa, expressing the uncertainties of any religious knowing." "Many of the texts included in this anthology are not only "representative texts about women" but formative texts of the various traditions, texts that have seeped into the language and consciousness of their culture and shaped its view of women. In her introduction the author sketches certain themes that are of central importance for the cross-cultural or comparative study of women in world religion: representations of women as evil, women as role models, wisdom as feminine, women religiosi, dualities, goddesses, sex changes and sex disguises, myths and stories of gender conflict. These themes can help guide the reader as she makes her way through virtual libraries of the world's sacred texts. Reading sacred texts in this way, from the perspective of women, can be a radical activity, an activity that, at its best, subverts male dominance of the text."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. "The fandom driving the magazine is infectious, and the best pieces are simply essential.... A large part of Anthology's draw, as with Wax Poetics the magazine, is how gorgeous it looks: Many pieces come with lovingly reproduced album covers and 45 labels, arrayed neatly like so much recordcollector porn." -The Onion A.V. Club Wax Poetics Anthology, Volume 1, the first book from the esteemed music journal showcasing everyone from jazz and Hip Hop heavyweights to soul and funk musicians, gathers articles from their first five issues into an attractive hardbound edition filled with vintage photos and album art. Including profiles of the Wu-Tang Clan's RZA, funk drummers Clyde Stubblefield and John "Jab'O" Starks, Wild Style director Charlie Ahearn, the late jazz bassist and composer Charles Mingus, and many more, this first installment of the Wax Poetics Anthology is a must-have for record collectors and music connoisseurs alike. First published in December 2001, Brooklyn-born Wax Poetics hit newsstands with a new vision for music journalism, creating a bridge between the past and present of Hip Hop, jazz, funk, soul, reggae, disco, and Latin music. Although originally created for a concentrated market of music aficionados, the magazine's audience has grown exponentially, making musical anthropologists out of average music listeners and spawning a soul renaissance, complete with comeback tours and sophomore efforts. Wax Poetics illuminates the dark corners of our sonic past, while also striving to give new and innovative artists the credit they truly deserve.

A year of hand-picked poems and commentaries from the Guardian's 'Poem of the Week' blog. Carol Rumens has been contributing 'Poem of the Week' to the Guardian for more than a dozen years. Do the maths: that's more than 624 blogs! No wonder she has a large and devoted following. She's a poet-reader, not an academic. She is fascinated by the new, but her interest is instructed by the classic poems she has read. They make her ear demanding: when it hears that something, it perks up. She perks up. 'A poem is a small (or large) machine made of words.' Rumens partly agrees with Williams but she develops the conceit, seeing each poem 'as a more flexible instrument, a miniature neo-cortex, that super-connective, super-layered smartest device of the mammalian brain'. She tries to avoid poems built from kits with instruction manuals. She looks for surprises, and she surprises us.
