The Collapse Of The American Management Mystique written by Robert R. Locke and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with Business & Economics categories.

Every nation likes to believe myths about itself. Americans' belief in the superiority of their managerial know-how seemed to be among those most solidly based in reality. Yet, Locke argues, despite its universal claims, American managerialism has never been more than a cultural peculiarity, one whose claims to superiority had not been proved but assumed, on the premise that the best economy must have the best management. That premise, moreover, has not served American managerialism particularly well, for in the 1970s a gap opened up between the mystique of American management and the realty of a mediocre American managerial performance. The 'mystique' collapsed and those looking for best practice began to look elsewhere. Locke traces the evolution of American management in the postwar era - the phenomenon once described by Churchill as that 'clear cut, logical, mass production style of thought'. He goes on to discuss in detail the views of such business writers as Chandler, Reich, Senge, and Deming. But the force of his critique rests on a thorough examination of alternative forms of management that grew up in West Germany and Japan during the past decades. He argues that these alternative management forms have done a better job managing capitalist economies since the 1970s than has American managerialism. But the book is not an essay in negativism. In the final chapter the author suggests paths that American management can follow in order to fulfil its original promise.

For many western managers the approach taken by successful Japanese organisations and their managers has tended to inspire awe, envy and incomprehension in equal measure. But what is so special about 'Japanese' management? And how 'special' is the response of Japanese managers to global business pressures ? This textbook addresses these questions. It presents case examples generated from interviews with Japanese managers in Japan, Europe and the USA, contextualising their comments by reference to recent research in the fields of international and intercultural management. The book explains how and why individual managers variously perceive threats or opportunities in the business and career environments currently evolving both inside and outside Japan. It combines vivid images of the expected and the exceptional, the traditional with the new and unfamiliar. The Changing Face of Japanese Management offers management students with little prior knowledge of Japanese business and society, critical insights into what is happening inside Japanese management today. It also offers clear and immediately transferable insights to management practitioners who are preparing to work or negotiate with Japanese business partners.

This book provides a new opportunity for corporate strategy analysis within a Japanese context. It is the first academic textbook to be published in English which regroups case studies to emphasize key concepts in Japanese management. Where previous literature has set a separate focus on cultural, managerial and strategic variables, a holistic look is now taken at their influence on effective decision-making. Over 11 detailed cases depict issues in entering the Japanese market, strategic issues when managing in Japan, marketing management, crisis management, cross-cultural encounters and future technologies. The sophistication and depth of these studies, along with their teaching notes, provide the basis for pragmatic analysis. The mysticism surrounding Japanese culture seems magnified by the success of Japanese companies abroad, and the shortcomings of many MNEs that entered Japan ineffectively. Studying the empirical implications of these issues is a helpful exercise to develop more acute management reflexes in a Japanese setting. The book's carefully laid out cases will benefit business and humanities students who are researching Japan, as well as professionals who work within this sphere.

Japanese companies operating internationally resemble Western multinationals only superficially. They are 'reluctant' because outward economic dependency compels them to venture overseas - into environments where they cannot enjoy the same high degree of control and support that they do in Japan. There is no generally accepted view of Japanese management among writers in Europe and America and yet effective management has been a major factor in the advance of Japanese companies. The different approaches to Japanese management and its basic concepts are discussed here, together with the problems of multinationalization. First published in 1983, this title is part of the Bloomsbury Academic Collections series.
