Shortly after the Seven Day War, an illegal politically-dangerous tunnel was dug underneath the Temple Mount by Hasidic Rabbis. A crude vault was found reportedly filled with ancient long lost temple paraphernalia, scrolls and other items. A group of professional archaeologists were urgently ordered into the vault to catalogue the clandestine find. They were discovered by Muslim guards on the top of the Temple Mount. Riots ensued. The so-called "Rabbi Tunnel" and subsequent riots are quite historical. The fictional The Jesiah Scrolls picks up the thread of the story at this point. Israeli officials work quickly to cover up the find with a gag order. To-date, no evidence of the finds have seen the light of day, nor has there been any confirmation of the find from anyone in authority. Officially no vault was found. Shortly after the political furor, the lead archaeologist on the site began to tell his young sons wonderfully detailed bedtime stories about a young shofar blower in King Solomon's temple. The stories told of the day-to-day life, feelings and conflicts of people in Iron Age II Jerusalem, the golden days of Israel, long before any Jew would have imagined even the remotest possibility of the temple being destroyed not once but twice. This was a wonderfully naive Israel. The Jesiah Scrolls is a Jewish tale of priests in Solomon's Temple during the 22 day High Holy Day celebrations. The three weeks are tragically marred by a shocking betrayal that will send shockwaves throughout the Temple priesthood-a betrayal with ancient unresolved shadows. What makes The Jesiah Scrolls unique is that it is both an entertaining tale and a thoroughly researched scholarly treatise on the First Temple. For students of First Temple Israel, this book could surprise you. Can the priests deal with a horrible divisive scandal-- before this celebration unravels before the very eyes of God and all Israel? Welcome to The Jesiah Scrolls!"

Isaiah 24-27 has been an enduring mystery and a hotly contested text for biblical scholars. Early scholarship linked its references to the dead rising to the New Testament. These theories have remained influential even as common opinion moderated over the course of the twentieth century. In this volume, Christopher B. Hays situates Isaiah 24-27 within its historical and cultural contexts. He methodically demonstrates that it is not apocalyptic; that its imagery of divine feasting and conquering death have ancient cognates; and that its Hebrew language does not reflect a late composition date. He also shows how the passage celebrates the receding of Assyrian power from Judah, and especially from the citadel at Ramat Rahel near Jerusalem, in the late seventh century. This was the time of King Josiah and his scribes, who saw a political opportunity and issued a peace overture to the former northern kingdom. Using comparative, archaeological, linguistic, and literary tools, Hays' volume changes the study of Isaiah, arguing for a different historical setting than that of traditional scholarship.

Josiah S Reform And Jeremiah S Scroll written by Mark Leuchter and has been published by Sheffield Phoenix Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-01 with Religion categories.

This exciting new study of the prophet Jeremiah attributes to him a pivotal significance in the historical period of Josiah's reign. He was, so Leuchter argues, one of the central agents of Josiah's propaganda machine and was intimately involved with the king's political agenda. Jeremiah, himself originally a member of the scribal school that composed the Deuteronomistic literature, encouraged the Shilonites of Anathoth to become active in Josiah's programme in the North following the waning of Assyrian power. Dismayed by the Shilonites' rejection of him and Josiah, and by the king's death at Megiddo, Jeremiah came to a radically new understanding of the divine purpose, encapsulated in the famous Temple sermon of Jeremiah 7 and evidenced in the prophet's debates with the political establishment in Jerusalem in the years that followed. In his thoroughgoing historical reconstruction, Leuchter outlines a very specific sequence of events that took their rise from the Shilonite rejection of Deuteronomic policy, and on that basis carefully demarcates the texts that would have been included in Jeremiah's first scroll (the Urrolle). Leuchter's monograph will make an important contribution to the study of the history and the literature of the late seventh century BCE.

2 Kings written by Robert L. Cohn and has been published by Liturgical Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with Religion categories.

Opening with the prophet Elijah's ascent into heaven and closing with the people of Judah's descent to Babylonia, 2 Kings charts the story of the two Israelite kingdoms until their destruction. This commentary unfolds the literary dimensions of 2 Kings, analyzes the strategies through which its words create a world of meaning, and examines the book's tales of prophets, political intrigue, royal apostasy, and religious reform as components of larger patterns. 2 Kings pays attention to the writers' methods of representing human character and of twisting chronological time for literary purposes. It also shows how the contests between kings and prophets are mirrored in the competing structures of regnal synchronization and prophecy-fulfillment. Much more than a common chronicle of royal achievements and disasters, 2 Kings emerges as a powerful history that creates memories and forges identities for its Jewish readers. 2 Kings is divided into four parts including Part One The Story of Elisha: 2 Kings 1:1-8:6"; Part Two "Revolutions in Aram, Israel, and Judah: 2 Kings 8:7-13:25"; Part Three "Turmoil and Tragedy for Israel: 2 Kings 14-17"; and Part Four "Renewal and Catastrophe for Judah: 2 Kings 18-25." Robert L. Cohn is professor of religion and holds the Philip and Muriel Berman Chair in Jewish studies at Lafayette College. Under the auspices of the American Jewish Committee, he lectured on Jewish interpretations of the Bible as the first American Jewish-scholar-in-residence at four Roman Catholic seminaries in Poland.
