The first three decades of Bourbon rule in France coincided with a period of violent fragmentation followed by rapid renewal within the French Catholic community. In the early 1590s, when Henri IV - Protestant head of the Bourbon house - acceded to the throne, French Catholics were at war with each other as Leaguer and Navarrist factions fought both militarily and ideologically for control of Catholic France. However, by 1620 a partially reconciled French church was in the process of defining a distinctive reform movement as French Catholics, encouraged by their monarchs, sought to assimilate aspects of the international Catholic reformation with Gallican traditions to renew their church. By 1650 this French Catholic church, and its distinctive reform movement forged in the decades following the collapse of the Catholic League, had become one of the most influential movements in European Catholicism. This study reconsiders the forces behind these dramatic developments within the French church through the re-examination of a classic question in French history: Why was the Society of Jesus able to integrate successfully into the French church in the opening decades of the seventeenth-century, despite being expelled from much of the kingdom in 1594 for its alleged role in the attempted assassination of the king? The expulsion, recall and subsequent integration of the Society into the French church offers a unique window into the evolution of French Catholicism between 1590 and 1620. It provides new insight into how Henri IV re-established royal authority in the French Catholic church following the collapse of the Catholic League and how this development helped to heal the rifts in French Catholicism wrought by the Leaguer movement. English Catholic voices, once disregarded as merely confessional, are now acknowledged to provide important perspectives on Elizabethan society. However, it is the particular role of the Jesuits that occupies central place in the narrative, highlighting the way in which the Society of Jesus typified all that Elizabethan England feared about the Church of Rome. Through an exhaustive study of the many facets of the Jesuit mission to England between 1589 and 1597, this book provides a fascinating insight not only into Catholic efforts to bring England back into the Roman Church, but also the simmering tensions, and disagreements on how this should be achieved, as well as debates concerning the very nature and structure of English Catholicism. It was during this period of tempestuous tension that a legendary religious order would emerge. The Middle Ages remains one of the most defining eras of human civilization. Like Roman Emperor Constantine the Great, St. Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556) found God about as far away from church as possible; it was during military service that he underwent a remarkable conversion. A Spanish knight who hailed from a noble Basque family, Ignatius seemed destined for military glory until he was badly wounded in 1521 during the Battle of Pamplona. While convalescing, Ignatius began reading De Vita Christi by Ludolph of Saxony, after which he began a tireless career in service of the Catholic Church. After spending several years studying the faith, Ignatius formed the Society of Jesus in 1539, and as its Superior General, he sent followers as missionaries across Europe to create schools, colleges, and seminaries. On September 27, 1540, Pope Paul issued a Papal Bull recognizing the church's newest religious order not as the Company of Jesus but as the Society of Jesus. The one thing that is clear is that neither Pope Paul, nor Ignatius, ever intended for members of the order to be known as the Jesuits. The causes which struck at Jesuitism, and occasioned its overthrow, in all the plenitude of undisputed power, were wholly local, and of a private and personal nature: whilst, to crown the general astonishment, the vast and powerful body, whose arms extended (as has been often said) to regions till lately unexplored - this universal colony of Rome, an object of dread to all, and feared even in the very seat of its power received its first blow, not from any great potentate, nor upon any of the principal theatres of Europe, but in one ofits ex treme corners, and in one of the weakest and most isolated of its kingdoms. This blow was struck in Portugal, an event which would indeed excite our surprise, if we considered only the power which the Order possessed in that country, ruling both monarch and people, the throne and the altar; but if we regard the excess and abuse of that power which itself tended to endanger its durability, and recall the circumstances which, fortuitously or not, are connected with the introduction of the Jesuits into the Court of Lisbon, our surprise will lessen, and we may find cause to reverse our opinion. They had undoubtedly rendered some partial services to Portugal, and added new and profitable subjects to the realm; in China and in the Indies they had extended the renown of the Portuguese name by their mis sionary labours, crowned, as they were, by martyrdom. But at the same time it must be remembered that the establishment. Of this society coincides with the decline of the Portuguese monarchy. Unhappily for Portugal, the Jesuits entered the country at the very time that a foreign influence was introduced, and the decay of the monarchy was rapid and even instantaneous. Though opposed to the testimony of almost all historians, we are disinclined to attribute this circumstance to the Jesuits we remark only that it was unfortunate for them to have been the active witnesses of the event. Right or wrong, responsibility attaches to those who exercise power; and it cannot be denied that in Portugal the Jesuits exercised sovereign power unin terruptedly for two centuries - from 1540 to 1750.
