The Jewish Gospel of John is not, by any standard, another book on Jesus of Nazareth written from a Jewish perspective. It is an invitation to the reader to put aside their traditional understanding of the Gospel of John and to replace it with another one more faithful to the original text perspective. The Jesus that will emerge will provoke to rethink most of what you knew about this gospel. The book is a well-rounded verse-by-verse illustrated rethinking of the fourth gospel. Here is the catch: instead of reading it, as if it was written for 21 century Gentile Christians, the book interprets it as if it was written for the first-century peoples of ancient Israel. The book proves what Krister Stendahl stated long time ago: "Our vision is often more abstracted by what we think we know than by our lack of knowledge." Other than challenging the long-held interpretations of well-known stories, the author with the skill of an experienced tour guide, takes us to a seat within those who most probably heard this gospel read in the late first century. Such exploration of variety of important contexts allows us to recover for our generation the true riches of this marvelous Judean gospel."Dr. Eli Lizorkin-Eyzenberg has produced an original and thought-provoking work. His book is an interesting effort to view this gospel as reflecting north-Israelite and Samaritan viewpoints. This study brings with it fresh interpretive air and new light to our challenging field." - Prof. Israel Knohl, Head of the Bible Department, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem."For some time, research on the Gospels has suffered from stagnation, and there is a feeling that there is not much new that one can say. In light of this, Dr. Eli Lizorkin-Eyzenberg's new commentary on the Gospel of John, with its original outlook on the identity of the original audience and the issues at stake, is extremely refreshing." - Prof. Ishay Rosen-Zvi, Head of the Talmud and Late Antiquity Department, Tel-Aviv University.

“[A] fascinating recasting of the story of Jesus.” —Elliot Wolfson, New York University In July 2008, a front-page story in the New York Times reported on the discovery of an ancient Hebrew tablet, dating from before the birth of Jesus, which predicted a Messiah who would rise from the dead after three days. Commenting on this startling discovery at the time, noted Talmud scholar Daniel Boyarin argued that “some Christians will find it shocking—a challenge to the uniqueness of their theology.” Guiding us through a rich tapestry of new discoveries and ancient scriptures, The Jewish Gospels makes the powerful case that our conventional understandings of Jesus and of the origins of Christianity are wrong. In Boyarin’s scrupulously illustrated account, the coming of the Messiah was fully imagined in the ancient Jewish texts. Jesus, moreover, was embraced by many Jews as this person, and his core teachings were not at all a break from Jewish beliefs and teachings. Jesus and his followers, Boyarin shows, were simply Jewish. What came to be known as Christianity came much later, as religious and political leaders sought to impose a new religious orthodoxy that was not present at the time of Jesus’s life. In the vein of Elaine Pagels’s The Gnostic Gospels, here is a brilliant new work that will break open some of our culture’s most cherished assumptions. “A brilliant and momentous book.” —Karen L. King, Harvard Divinity School “Raises profound questions . . . This provocative book will change the way we think of the Gospels in their Jewish context.” —John J. Collins, Yale Divinity School “It’s certainly noteworthy when one of the world’s leading Jewish scholars publishes a book about Jesus . . . Extremely stimulating.” —Daniel C. Peterson, The Deseret News

John The Jewish Gospel written by Carroll Roberson and has been published by WestBow Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-30 with Religion categories.

The Gospel of John is unique among the Gospels. It proclaims Christs love in a way the others do not. It also contains a different selection of miracles and teachings from our Lord. Most importantly, John places special focus on the complete and simultaneous divinity and humanity of Messiah. This is emphasized by the account being bookended between the powerful first chapter that reveals Christ as God the Creator and Johns nine-chapter retelling of the events surrounding Jesuss passion and resurrection. Over the centuries, Christianity has become dominated by well-meaning Gentile thought as the center of world culture has moved westward and anti-Semitic prejudice has become subtly more prevalent. As a result, we have missed the rich depth of so many truths by not reading the Gospel of John from his point of view of having walked and talked with his Jewish Messiah and God in the flesh. Most commentators approach Johns Gospel with a focus on expounding on the Greek language of the text. From this point, it is easy to wander into the realm of misunderstanding because Gentiles dissecting Gentile words leads to Gentile logic and analysis imposing itself on the fulfillment of the Jewish faith. In John the Jewish Gospel, Carroll Roberson invites the reader to get to know Jesus better by examining the text of John verse by verse and passage by passage from a first-century Jewish perspective. He does this with an open Old Testament and a wealth of biblical knowledge, study, and experience ready. Carroll pays special attention to messianic prophesy and details within the text that come alive when viewed with an understanding of the culture of the time. John the Jewish Gospel is a wonderful addition to the library of anyone who seeks to grow closer to Jesus the Messiah.

If Jesus is a Jew, why is there a wedge between Christianity and Judaism? If Jews and Christians both believe in the same God, why is there such division? Why is history littered with deathly accounts of this division, from the early Jewish persecution of Christians to the Crusades' slaughtering of Jews? The Lion of Judah unpacks the roots of this division, showing how jealousy, theology, the law, and the integration of Gentile believers into what was once a predominantly Jewish early church contributed to the schism. It then goes on to reveal how Jesus magnificently fulfilled every word in the Bible. Readers will discover why the Lion of Judah is the rightful Lord and King of all people--Jews, Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Sikhs, atheists, and the rest of creation. This book will help Christians understand the history of Christianity and Judaism, get into greater alignment with God's plan of redemption, be better equipped to share the gospel with Jewish people, and become more sensitive to and appreciative of their Hebraic heritage.

Only John's Gospel says that Jesus was crucified as Jesus the Nazorean, the King of the Jews. Jesus was the keeper of the ways of the first temple in Jerusalem. These had almost been lost when the Moses traditions came to dominate in the second-temple period. Jesus' mission was to restore the ways of the original temple. He entrusted his visions to John the Elder, a priestly disciple in Jerusalem, and John compiled them into the Book of Revelation. Later, John wrote his Gospel to show how the visions had been fulfilled. The background to the Fourth Gospel is temple tradition. John shows how Jesus' debates with the Jews centred on the great difference between the world of the second temple and the world of the priest-kings of the first temple from which Christianity emerged. The Johannine community were the Hebrew disciples of Jesus who saw themselves as the true high priesthood restored.

In this book Richard Horsley and Tom Thatcher trace the Gospel of John's portrayal of Jesus as a prophet of renewal by reading the text against a double backdrop -- the social history of Roman Palestine and the media world of John. This innovative study is the first to consider the Gospel of John as story in the ancient media context of oral communication and oral performance. Horsley and Thatcher creatively combine concerns from the fields of Jesus studies and ancient media studies in their analysis. Taking the main conflict evident in John's story of Jesus as the key to its plot, they discern how this Gospel -- usually read as "spiritual" -- portrays Jesus engaged in a concrete program of renewal and resistance.
