Examines the struggle between Innocent II and Anacletus II, a member of the Roman Pierleoni family which had converted from Judaism to Christianity. In contrast to the prevailing theory that the split was ideological and that Innocent and his supporters in the monastic movement (e.g., Bernard of Clairvaux, Peter the Venerable, Matthew of Albano) represented a progressive church reform party, argues that it was basically political. Anacletus' Jewish origin and his family's banking activities were exploited in a successful campaign of vilification against him. Ch. 15 (pp. 156-168), "The Anatomy of the Schism: The Jewish Element", shows how increased antisemitism after the First Crusade and the image of the Jew as a usurer contributed to this campaign.

Examines the theological attitudes and practical behavior toward Jews of various popes, from Gelasius I (492-496) to Alexander VI (1492-1503). Pre-Christian Rome was favorable to Jews. The first anti-Jewish laws were introduced by the Christian rulers of the Roman Empire. However, papal Rome used Roman law as a pattern for its legislation, and some provisions favorable to Jews were maintained. All of the popes aspired to convert the Jews to Christianity, sometimes due to practical considerations rather than theological ones. For example, Gregory the Great (590-604), who defined the future policies of the papacy toward the Jews, regarded the existence of a heterodox populace among Christians at a time of war against barbarians and heretics as politically dangerous. Despite this, the popes opposed the forced conversion of Jews, protected their lives and personal freedom, and condemned popular anti-Jewish superstitions. Even at the time of the harshest persecutions, popes like Innocent III respected Jews as people who had a unique role in the history of salvation. In medieval papal documents there are no traces of racism. In the 14th-15th centuries, when the problem of Conversos arose, the popes opposed limitations on "New Christians". The lower clergy and the common people did not always follow pontifical prescriptions, and anti-Jewish violence and forced conversion was a common occurrence. Contends that the papacy bears responsibility for what was done by Christians to Jews.

Political disputations over their cups were already at that time a most favourite occupation of the German Burghers. These were generally of a boisterous nature and often ended in actual fights, so much so that many of the disputants had to be carried home with broken heads. On the night in question the subject of the discussion was the sanguinary struggle which was being carried on between the Emperor Henry IV. and the Pope. All kinds of opinions were freely expressed about the issue of the struggle, diverse prognostications were indulged in according to the side espoused by the speakers. In February 1945, Israele Zolli, chief rabbi of Rome's ancient Jewish community, shocked his co-religionists in Italy and throughout the Jewish world by converting to Catholicism and taking as his baptismal name, Eugenio, to honor Pope Pius XII (Eugenio Pacelli) for what Zolli saw as his great humanitarianism toward the Jews during the Holocaust. Almost a half a century after his conversion, Zolli still evokes anger and embarrassment in Italy's Jewish community. This book is the first authoritative treatment of this astonishing story. What induced Zolli to embrace Catholicism will probably never be known. Nonetheless, by painstaking scholarly detective work, through interviews in Italy and elsewhere, through the unearthing of private papers not previous known to exist, and through the study of previous inaccessible archival materials, the authors have succeeded in explaining why Zolli left the Jewish fold and joined the Catholic Church. Like Zolli's rabbinical career, Pius XII's long pontificate tells us much about the Church of Rome and its relationship to the Jewish people, particularly with reference to the issue of conversion. The authors focus on the pontiff's World War II policies vis-A-vis the Jews, a subject that has been heatedly debated since Rolf Hochhuth's The Deputy was performed in the early 1960s. What Pacelli knew abut the extermination of the Jews and when he knew it, what he said and failed to say, are given special attention in this book. Through the examination of previous scholarship and primary materials (including Pius XI's encyclical on race and anti-Semitism, Pacelli's behavior is evaluated to determine if Zolli accurately gauged the Holy Father's efforts to save Jews. This saga of the two Eugenios will interest historians of the Second World War and the Holocaust and students of history alike.
