John Shafer was likely born 16 August 1793 in Somerset Co., Pennsylvania. By 1815, he had moved to Ohio and worked as a shoemaker. He married Mary Putman prior to 1817 and they lived in Ohio. They were the parents of eleven known children. Descendants lived primarily in Ohio, Kansas, Iowa and elsewhere.

A 4th great grand son Johannes (John F.) Schafer (1815-1887) and his wife Louise Magdalene Scheuer (1810-1881) emigrated to America in 1854. They were living in Princeton, Illinois in 1857.

The Schafer family was originally from Württemberg, Germany. Includes some descendants of Johannes (John) Shafer/Schafer (1817-1890), son of Joh. Michael Schafer and Johanna Hartfelder. He was born in Bouch Württtemberg, Germany, and died at St. Joseph, Berrien Co., Mich. He married (1) 1842 in Germany, Jacobina Boyle Beil (1822-1884); (2) 1885 Elizabeth Massing. John came to America in 1847. He had nine children. Descendants in this booklet are through three of his sons, John (1844-1906) who married Mary Rymer; William (b. 1848) who married Emma Hyatt; and Levi (b. 1851). Includes short biographies of John and William Shafer.
