This is an autobiographical novel of youth spent on the German home front during World War I. First published in Germany in 1928 as Jahrgang 1902, Glaeser's autobiographical novel centers on the experiences of the narrator, E., and his friends who come of age during the Great War but never know combat because the war ends before they can be drafted. Through their perspectives Glaeser provides glimpses into traumatic times on the German home front. Over the four years covered by the novel, E. witnesses the buildup and deployment of troops, the return of the wounded, deaths, hunger, and air raids. His own actions follow a quest for sexual experience and, moreover, the understanding of life he believes will come from such experience. As E. simultaneously spurns the onset of adulthood and yearns for the physical pleasures that might accompany such a transition, his life repeatedly intersects with the war, moving him in and out of dangers and eventually taking his girlfriend Anna from him before they can consummate their relationship. Through the vibrantly detailed episodes that make up the work, Glaeser gives a street-level vantage point on the sufferings of the German civilian population and shows the high cost of war even for those with no direct involvement in its outcome. Deemed ""a damned good book"" by Ernest Hemingway, Glaeser's work warrants reading today for its value as a historical document and as a novel of antiwar sentiments from a German perspective. ""Civilization, 1914-1917"" is a largely autobiographical narrative of the Great War written by a remarkable observer - a French physician, poet, and novelist who treated the wounded and performed some two thousand operations in mobile hospital units during the war. First published in 1918 and translated into English the following year, the book was awarded the Prix Goncourt and a special award of the Academie Francaise. Out of print for ninety years, Georges Duhamel's account is available once more in this Joseph M. Bruccoli Great War Series edition featuring a new introduction by Catharine Savage Brosman, which offers a biographical sketch of Duhamel and places his work within the context of French narratives of World War I. Duhamel's book comprises sixteen vignettes in which character rather than plot remains the constant focus. Each tale is presented in the first person but with varying narrators. The settings are often field medical units just miles away from the bombardments. Here the stench of blood, plight of the wounded, and efforts of well-intentioned doctors bring to the fore the realities of war as Duhamel knew them to be. Pathos, anger, and frustration are more plentiful than any sense of glory, duty, or honor in these circumstances. In lieu of the political and nationalistic considerations of war that dominate the writings of some of his contemporaries, Duhamel's narratives offer instead the historical and literary merits of his keen attention to details - particularly concerning combat medicine - and his rich development of the varied tones, characters, and locations of his sketches. This is a brutal tale of the exploits of French commandos on the Great War's Bulgarian front. First published in 1934, Vercel's novel was awarded the Prix Goncourt for its unflinching assessment of the toll fierce combat had taken on the youth of France. Largely autobiographical and told from the perspective of a young lieutenant, the book follows the exploits of a French commando unit attacking Bulgarian outposts along the Romanian border. The unit is led by Captain Conan, a haberdasher's son who finds his calling as a fearless killer ready to crawl through barbed wire and slit the throats of his enemies on midnight raids. Conan is loyal only to his men, as all notions of patriotism are lost in place of the fraternity and brutality needed for survival and success in this close combat. Following the Armistice, Conan's unit is redeployed to Bucharest to maintain the peace, but they do more harm than good. The soldiers have become murderers, thieves, and rapists, and Conan himself is charged with injuring his lover's husband. But the victim withdraws the charges, and Conan leaves Bucharest when the French are called to combat Lenin and Trotsky's guerrilla forces along the Ukrainian border. Conan and his men, now facing their former Russian allies, have lost all ideals of honorable battle and are reduced to serving as mindless weapons to be moved about on the field. Conan becomes the hero of his final fight, but Vercel shows us that there is no happy homecoming for a trained killer - only isolation, loneliness, and nostalgia for battles Conan never fully understood. Morgan's introduction to this new edition maps the public reception of Vercel's novel and places the book in the larger context of World War I combat literature.
