Introduction Life has a way of turning ordinary journeys into extraordinary adventures. The sheer joy and satisfaction we felt in these discussions made the universe seem closer than ever. I think it was the open mind of the child journeying with us that inspired me to think beyond the ordinary and imagine all this. And then, the idea of this book-cum-novel was born. It wasn’t something I planned or struggled with—it simply flowed, as if it had always been waiting to be written. This short novel is a unique combination of science fiction and autobiographical reality. Just like the dual nature of matter—both wave and particle—this story, too, holds two truths at once. It is as real as it is fictional. What one perceives, it becomes. It dances between fact and imagination, shaped by the reader’s own lens. In other words, it's like the illustrator's biographical life journey projected into space. It also holds both spiritual and material meaning, depending on the viewpoint of the reader. For some, it may appear as a futuristic tale about life beyond Earth; for others, it may resonate as a metaphor for the journey within. One who is fulfilled with the outward journey can only then begin the inward one. Trying to go inward too soon, without first exploring the outer realms, may keep one under the subtle grip of illusion. Interestingly, I had always written under a pen name, choosing to keep my identity undisclosed for various reasons. My son, though, was never really a fan. He’d tease me all the time, saying stuff like, “Papa, your pen name is totally lame!” All I could do was laugh and shake my head. So, for the first time, I made a different choice—I wrote this book in his name instead of mine. It felt like the perfect tribute to the youngest member of our family, who was just a little child—still in nursery and kindergarten—when we first stepped beyond the comfort of home and into a world of endless possibilities. This book is more than just a story; it’s a reflection of our journey, a blend of love, curiosity, science, dreams—and the belief that no destination is too far—not even the moon.

This book stems from the question that we as co-authors grappled with for the past 3-plus years while in our own periods of stasis during the pandemic: What place does the travel writing genre hold in a post-COVID world? With the massive interruptions to travel and travel writing across 2020-2023 as the pandemic forced us indoors and into isolation, it also raised many other pertinent questions about the practice of and future of travel writing. Part of the prompt for this book comes from the post-pandemic assumption that in an ecologically fraught, less mobile, and more uncertain world, there may not be a place for travel writing as we know it to exist in any meaningful way. We examine the problems and solutions apparent for travel writing as it engages with a period of re-thinking, prompted by the pandemic, though necessary for a plethora of other reasons as well. As academics and travel writing practitioners, with decades of experience in the field, we offer a unique perspectiveon this topic – as we have the in-the-field experience of professional travel writers, and we have the academic grounding to better understand the history, theoretical concerns and contradictions of the genre to provide a more in-depth perspective to our travel writing colleagues. Drawing upon the interdisciplinary field of social memory studies, this book opens up new vistas on the historical and political culture of early modern England. This book examines the conflicting ways in which the civil wars and Interregnum were remembered, constructed and represented in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century England. It argues that during the late Stuart period, public remembering of the English civil wars and Interregnum was not concerned with re-fighting the old struggle but rather with commending and justifying, or contesting and attacking, the Restoration settlements. After the return of King Charles II the political nation had to address the question of remembering and forgetting the recent conflict. The answer was to construct a polity grounded on remembering and scapegoating puritan politics and piety. The proscription of the puritan impulse enacted by the Restoration settlements was supported by a public memory of the 1640s and 1650s which was used to show that Dissenters could not, and should not, be trusted with power. Drawing upon the interdisciplinary field of social memory studies, this book offers a new perspective on the historical and political cultures of early modern England, and will be of significant interest to social, cultural and political historians aswell as scholars working in memory studies. Matthew Neufeld is Lecturer in early modern British history at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada.
