Through evocative photography and meaningful text, this celebration of Irish music will stir people's hearts and memories -- Tells the story of Irish music and its place in the hearts of Irish people, from the 1920s to the 1990s, with references to the Famine, emigration, and early traditions and superstitions -- Portrays notable Irish musicians living in the U.S., including the hugely popular Martin Hayes and legendary Chicago Police Chief Francis O'Neill, whose collection of traditional tunes is a bible for Irish musiciansIrish music is rooted in its people, ordinary working folk who lived off the land and whose lives it enriched and sustained. This is the story of that music: how it was passed down, collected, and added to; how it lived on through immigrations, changes, and technologies. Told in compelling fictional style through several generations of one family, it is a lively tale that conveys both the deep spirit of the music itself, and the rich and troubled history of Ireland's people.Marvelous photography and lyrical text recall images of old folks dancing in the kitchen, musicians at a wake, of hurling matches and pub sessions -- beautifully re-creating the rhythms of life in Ireland from the '20s to the '90s, and imparting a vivid experience of this rich musical legacy. There was music before me and after me -- on both sides of my family they could play. There was music in nearly every house where we came from, up in the humps and hollows, wet, bad land, all bog and lake. Music was all people had ... it was within you and you could take it with you wherever you went. -- from the book

The Irish Celebrating is a collection of essays which focuses on the complex dynamics of celebrating, its significance and its scope, through Ireland’s past and present experience. This book studies the dual aspects of celebrating —‘the festive’ and ‘the tragic’— which, while not necessarily functioning as a binary opposition, have long proved mutually constitutive of the Irish experience. Many different occasions and ways of celebrating are explored, be they associated with feasts, festivals, commemorations, re-enactments or mere merry-making. Irish literature abounds with motifs, symbols, allusions and devices that stand as ample testimony to the essential part played by celebration in the creative process. Both the treatment of mythical themes and figures, and the perception of contrasted realities and moods, all linked in some way or another with celebrating, are examined in the works of Irish novelists, poets and playwrights. If celebrations undeniably had a crucial role to play throughout Ireland’s troubled past, they continue to shape Irish society today, part and parcel of the deep social, economic and cultural changes it is currently experiencing. New representations of Irish identity as they are expressed through new forms of celebrating are explored in such varied contexts as emigration and immigration, alcohol addiction, church allegiance and European membership. The way the nationalist and unionist communities have been celebrating their past in Northern Ireland, often complacently and ostentatiously, is a theme dealt with in the final section of this collection. Irish, English, French, Spanish, Italian and American scholars apply a broad range of interdisciplinary expertise to original and illuminating essays which will undoubtedly provoke a new insight into the interplay between current trends and issues and the long-established patterns that thread through the volume.

Last Night's Fun's is a sparking celebration of music and life that is itself a literary performance of the highest order. Carson's inspired jumble of recording history, poetry, tall tales, and polemic captures the sound and vigor of a ruthlessly unsentimental music. Last Night's Fun is remarkable for its liveliness, honesty, scholarship, and spontaneous joy; certainly there has never been a book about Irish music like this one, and few books ever written anywhere about the experience of music can compare with it.

This is not an academic study but rather a compelling look into the world that has shaped Liam Lawton s music, from the early Christian settlers in Ireland, to the stories of Famine days to the contemporary world of Irish music.
