Once upon a time in America, storefront help-wanted signs reading "Irish Need Not Apply" were commonplace. Back then, the Irish were considered fit for only the most menial, hazardous, or undignified of jobs. But for a culture of survivors, if the famine didn't kill them, a little ditch digging wouldn't either. And so Irish grandparents and great grandparents struggled and fought and finally flourished in their new land. Today, millions of Americans can trace their ancestry to Ireland. This small volume is a love letter to Irish heritage, a reminder of shared experience, forgotten traditions, and the beliefs and attitudes that define the Irish Americans. It contains reminiscences, common memories, and stereotypes--some deserved, others not. Sometimes funny, sometimes nostalgic and touching, this book is an everyman's history of a nation of immigrant survivors, a tribute to Irish Americans and their ancestors.

Amid the turmoil of the 1960s and 1970s—an era that included the Black Civil Rights movement, the war in Vietnam, and the Troubles in Northern Ireland—young Irish Americans in New York began to question what it meant to be Irish in America. Led by Irish revolutionary socialist Brian Heron, these young people discarded outdated stereotypes and created an inclusive space to explore, celebrate, and share their culture. Thus was born An Claidheamh Soluis, the Irish Arts Center, an organization that is still going strong fifty years later. As an early organizer and director of the Irish Arts Center, James F. Olwell recounts how this premier cultural institution came to be. Beginning with his own experiences growing up Irish American in the Bronx, Olwell describes how Irish Americans grew to reclaim their cultural identity and share their art, traditions, and language through the Irish Arts Center. Olwell combines his personal experiences with extensive interviews and broader historical context to bring the story of the 1970s Irish Arts Center to life. Well researched and replete with funny, moving, and thoughtful anecdotes, The Art of Being Irish in Hell’s Kitchen is an essential cultural history of the Irish American community in New York. Pull up a chair and enjoy the tale. All are welcome here.

Those who thought being Irish was about parades, shamrocks, and green beer get a peek into a decidedly deeper culture in Joe Keefe's edgy and hilarious book Being Irish Contemplations on the Nature and Meaning of the Irish Race.Whether it's eating, drinking, loving, or learning, the Irish experience-as Keefe explains it-is shaded in innumerable ways by family, faith, and a fair sense of knowing exactly where you stand. All of this makes for a rollicking good read, in short bits and big letters for the Irish among the readership.

New York University's Glucksman Ireland House opened a quarter-century ago to foster the study of Ireland and Irish America, and since then has led and witnessed tremendous changes in Irish and Irish-American culture. Alice McDermott writes about her son's Irish awakening; Colum McCann's Joycean essay is a brilliant call to action in defence of immigrants and social justice; Colm Tóibín's first visit to New York coincided with the first St Patrick's Day parade led by a woman; Dan Barry reflects on Frank McCourt's Angela's Ashes; and a new poem by Seamus Heaney written not long before his death. Through deeply personal essays that reflect on their own experience, research and art, some of the best-known Irish writers on both sides of the Atlantic commemorate the House's anniversary by examining what has changed, and what has not, in Irish and Irish-American culture, art, identity, and politics since 1993.

In the minds of many, the nineteenth-century Irish famine seemed to create an environment that later produced an avoidance of marriage, drunkenness, violence, and mental illness. If ever predominant in Irish cultural behavior, those moments have passed. As a result, Professors Philip L. Kilbride and Noel J. J. Farley outline the positive contributions the contemporary Irish make to the world around them, particularly Africa. From this, generosity emerges as a major Irish cultural virtue. The authors trace it from the Celtic period, showing how it became a central concern of Roman Catholics from the nineteenth-century to today. Professors Kilbride and Farley use ethnographic techniques and narrative perspective to focus on the life of an Irish entrepreneur and philanthropist who has lived in Africa since 1970. They also illuminate the missionary work in Kenya of an Irish Jesuit and others of Irish heritage there. These accounts, coupled with other narratives and historical evidence, detail the prevalence and practice of Irish generosity to further document what they conclude is an Irish caring tradition. This volume will be of interest to a wide audience including anthropologists, economists, historians, philosophers, political scientists, sociologists, theologians, and Irish and African studies programs. It is accessible to undergraduate and graduate students as a supplemental reading within the varieties of fields aforementioned. Book jacket.

'Being Irish' presents 100 people - from Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, to UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, to writer Frank McCourt - giving expression to that special something that is (more or less) instantly recognisable as Irish; to detect and describe changes in it; and to record the rich tapestry that is Irish identity today.
