This is not a commentary in the traditional sense. One might call it an existential commentary. An important aim of the author is to bring out the relevance of the story, of the person, mission, and situation of Jonah, to Christians in our own time. Above all, this is a theological, or --more specifically -- a christological commentary. The author's chief aim is to relate the book, not to Christians, but to Christ. Ellul thinks Christ is the center of all Scripture, and he also takes seriously the specific reference which Christ makes to the sign of Jonah. If this reading is correct, and the Bible is indeed a unity, the exposition of Ellul, though not developed in detail, has a distinctive theological contribution to make. Those who want acute theological insight, and are not afraid of plain, hard-hitting application, will read this vivid study with relish and profit. -- From the Preface by G. W. Bromiley

"Jonah's Judgment," a parable of judgment and justice, is a modern retelling of the story of Jonah and his assignment to bring a warning to the doomed city of Ninevah. Involved is Jonah's dilemma in his duty to God's directive as opposed to his own hatred for Ninevah and its people. The lesson is that the Old Testament God, who is popularly believed to be angry, vengeful and punishing, desires to show mercy whereas the man Jonah, is bound by his own prejudices and sense of judgment; Jonah is self-willed and inflexible in his interpretation of God's system of justice. In this account Jonah spends 40 days traveling about Ninevah announcing the approaching destruction of the city. He confronts a variety of the citizens and leaders of the city with surprising reactions to his message. This parable, based on the O.T. book, "Jonah," believed to have been written in the 9th century B.C., demonstrates the ageless tendency of man to substitute his own concept of justice and God's purposes as seen even today among some of the world's most determined religions. The author, Robert W. Foster, is a retired civil engineer. In his (semi) retirement he continues to provide consulting services in dispute resolution and writes frequently for technical publications in the engineering and surveying disciplines. He has three sons and two grandsons. His wife of 47 years, Margot, died in 2001. He lives in Hopkinton, Massachusetts.

This study is designed as a commentary with a difference, where the reading of the prophet's travails is explored in the context of two wider themes: (1) the overt and highly sophisticated intertwining of Jonah's story with an impressively wide range of other biblical texts, often deployed in surprising ways; and (2) the clearly contrarian relationship between God and Jonah which has both vexed and intrigued scholars and lay readers alike for millennia. Underpinning this reading is a twofold thesis: firstly, an argument that many of the puzzles inherent in the book of Jonah can be illuminated in the light of the idea that Nineveh was from the beginning a cipher for the Jerusalem of the author's time; and secondly, that this would have been evident to Jonah's first readers: the class of elite literati amongst the ruling cadre of late Persian or early Hellenistic Judaea.

The biblical account of Jonah is one of the most incredible stories in the Bible. The artwork in this comic helps bring this amazing story to life. It begins with the compelling account of a man from the 1900s who also lived to tell about being swallowed alive. The fish's digestive juices destroyed the man's hair and discolored his skin but he was cut out of the fish's belly 2 days later —still alive! Suddenly, Jonah's adventure becomes more real. And once readers learn how God sent Jonah to spare Nineveh from judgment, they'll also discover that God sent His own Son to save us from hell. This full-color comic will build faith in the scriptures and lead people to Jesus. It's a powerful witnessing tool!

The book of Jonah was written by Jonah in Palestine in about 853–824 BC. The book is a story of a biased Jew who preached and converted the whole city of Nineveh after being chastened by the Lord for his disobedience. The purpose of the book was to show why Nineveh was destroyed and the Assyrian Empire was delayed by God for almost a century; to show that God’s mercy and salvation are for both Jews and Gentiles who repent and turn to him; and to illustrate the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
