In 1987 a tragic fire swept through London's King's Cross underground station claiming 31 lives after a dropped match set fire to escalator machinery. The charred remains of the victims were painstakingly identified from a list of reported missing persons and their dental and medical records, but twelve months later, one body remained unidentified. The last victim acquired the name it had been given at the morgue, Body 115, and that was where it appeared the investigation would end late in 1988, when all leads had run dry. But Inspector Ian Wilkinson could not let the case rest. Despite much unwarranted and very public criticism over his handling of the search and rescue mission, he vowed that he would not leave the British Transport Police until the nameless 5 foot 2 inch smoker had been identified.

The 1987 Kings Cross Piccadilly Line escalator fire was the worst disaster the London Underground has ever seen. It was casued by a criminal negligence in cleaning under the escalators that led to a grease and rubbish fire that quickly grew until after barely 20 minutes it burst out and killed 31 people with heat, pressure and poisonous smoke. At the official investigation the experts were unable to agree between themselves what caused the blast but this book explains everything clearly so that tube passengers, staff and firefighters can know what happened that day.

Fires And Human Behaviour written by David Canter and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-06-03 with Psychology categories.

This second edition of Fires and Human Behaviour was originally published in 1990 and since the first edition in 1980 there continued to be considerable loss of life in small and large fires throughout the world. The most significant of these from a behavioural point of view was the Kings Cross underground station in 1988. This was a relatively small fire caused by inappropriate human actions. What appeared to remain timeless and of value ten years after the first edition was published were the details of what actually happens in fires and the psychological models that emerged from studying those details. This second edition was therefore edited to keep the original detailed case studies and to add information about some major incidents that had occurred since 1980.
