Excerpt from The Kingdom of Israel: From Its Inception Under Joshua, Its First President, in the Year of the World 2553, to the Second Advent of Christ The first of the two chapters of The Western Star of Empire was very hastily written thirteen years ago, and handed to a Copyist without revision, and it now appears as first penciled, and is not at all what it should have been from the abundant Bible material at hand. The sub iect has not had justice done it by us, and we simply add here that all the Western movements are God-ward in the Empire of Israel, and hence have ever been exalting, or elevating and advancing to the nation, while all of her Eastern movements have been into captivity and degredation. All of her various captivities have been to the nations immediate to the East of her, and hence all of her various deliver anecs and restorations have been in movements from the East to the West. This first chapter is purely historic. The second chapter, more recently written, is prophetic in its materials and comes down to a verification, in historic fulfillment, up to this hour, with the infant nation hid away in or under a despotism. We follow The Western Star of Empire, as seen in its two chap ters. With an exhaustive exposition of the prophecy of Obadiah, as strictly applicable to the same, in chapters I, IV and V. And then the preface and exposition of the seals, trumpets and vials, arranged in chapters to itself, follow as part second of this small voiume, no. 2. Despite considerable scholarly efforts for many years, the last two decades of the Kingdom of Israel are still beneath the veil of history. What was the status of the Kingdom after its annexation by Assyria in 732 BCE? Who conquered Samaria, the capital of the Kingdom? When did it happen? One of the primary reasons for this situation lies in the discrepancies found in the historical sources, namely the Hebrew Bible and the Assyrian texts. Since biblical studies and Assyriology are two distinct disciplines, the gaps in the sources are not easy to bridge. Moreover, recent great progress in the archaeological research in the Southern Levant provides now crucial new data, independent of these textual sources. This volume, a collection of papers by leading scholars from different fields of research, aims to bring together, for the first time, all the available data and to discuss these conundrums from various perspectives in order to reach a better and deeper understanding of this crucial period, which possibly triggered in the following decades the birth of "new Israel" in the Southern Kingdom of Judah, and eventually led to the formation of the Hebrew Bible and its underlying theology.

Ancient Israel is widely regarded as having been set apart from the nations, representing a unique sociopolitical entity in the ancient world. United by a common tribal identity and a commitment to worshiping the God who delivered them from Egypt exclusively, the Israelites established an egalitarian community that stood in contrast to the hierarchical polities of their polytheistic. In spite of these traditions, modern scholarship for the most part has recognized the points of continuity between Canaanite religion and Israelite religion and concluded that the two religious systems largely developed from the same cultural milieu. However, scholars continue to contend that the Canaanites’ and Israelites’ social and political structures were distinct. Most scholars agree that the Israelites were geographical, economic, and/or political outsiders. The Land before the Kingdom of Israel responds to this modern perspective by contributing an original reconstruction of the sociopolitical landscape of the Late Bronze Age Levant that exposes points of continuity between the polities and populations that inhabited the land and those that were later identified with Israel. By examining multiple sources, Brendon Benz isolates and accounts for complex social and political realities that have gone unnoticed. In so doing, he sets the stage for viewing premonarchic Israel and the Bible’s depiction of it in a new way. In addition to shedding light on historical memories embedded in the books of Judges and Samuel that do not conform to conventional wisdom regarding Israel’s early history, Benz demonstrates that a contingent of the early Israelites was heir to the social and political structures of their Late Bronze Age Levantine predecessors.

Based on several core traditions that dominate the biblical narrative, Israel is widely regarded as having been set apart from among the nations, representing a unique sociopolitical entity in the ancient world. United by a common tribal identity and a commitment to worshiping the God who delivered them from Egypt exclusively, the Israelites established an egalitarian community in the southern Levant that stood in contrast to the hierarchical polities of their polytheistic neighbors in the land of Canaan.00In spite of these traditions, modern scholarship for the most part has recognized the points of continuity between so-called Canaanite religion and Israelite religion and concluded that the two religious systems largely developed from the same cultural milieu. However, scholars continue to contend that the Canaanites? and Israelites? social and political structures were distinct. Although modern models vary widely, most scholars agree that the Israelites were geographical, economic, and/or political outsiders.
