Kirkland 1841-1929 Cobbtown, Georgia, by authors Catherine Ost Kirkland and Cora Lancaster Kirkland, began as a quest to find the father of the authors' common ancestor, Henry T. Kirkland. As they compiled their decades of research, they made discoveries that led them to not only to Henry T.'s ancestors, but also untangled some of the conflated Richard and John Kirklands. The narrative details the branch of the Kirkland family who settled in the Bulloch/Emanuel county area in the 1780s and links them to ancestors who migrated from Virginia through the Carolinas and into Georgia. Of interest to local and regional family history buffs, is the compilation of lineage information, as well as brief descriptions of the American Revolution and American Civil War and the effects and influences of those wars on this family. Readers will also find information about Kirklands who were connected to other notable figures in Bulloch County, through their membership in the Hebron Primitive Baptist Church. Authors Catherine and Cora are connected through marriage to descendants of Henry T. Kirkland. Catherine's husband and Cora's sons are 3rd cousins.

Specifically the descendants of John's great-grandson, William Kirkland (1768-1836) who married Margaret Blain Scott (1773-1839) in 1792. William Kirkland had emigrated from Scotland to the United States in 1789 arriving and settling in North Carolina. His descendants lived in North Carolina, and elsewhere.
