In March 1921 the sailors of Kronstadt, the naval fortress in the Gulf of Finland, rose in revolt against the Bolshevik government, which they themselves had helped into power. Under the slogan of Òfree soviets,'' they established a revolutionary commune that survived for sixteen days, until an army came across the ice to crush it. After a savage struggle, the rebels were subdued. Paul Avrich vividly describes the uprising and examines it in the context of the development of the Soviet state. Originally published in 1970. The Kronstadt uprising of 1921 was one of the most important yet often overlooked events of the Russian civil war. The bloody suppression of the rebels by the 'government of the workers and peasants' marked the final blow to any hopes of a genuine popular revolution based on democratic self-management.

Kronstadt 1917 1921 written by Israel Getzler and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-05-16 with History categories.

This is the first major study of revolutionary Kronstadt to span the period from February 1917 to the uprising of March 1921. It focuses attention on Kronstadt's forgotten golden age, between March 1917 and July 1918, when Soviet power and democracy flourished there. Professor Getzler argues that the Kronstadters' 'Third Revolution' of March 1921 was a desperate attempt at a restoration of that Soviet democracy which they believed had been taken from them by Bolshevik 'commissarocracy'. Pointing to continuity in personnel, ideology and institutions linking the 1917-18 Kronstadt experiment in Soviet democracy with the March 1921 uprising, the author sees that continuity reflected in the Kronstadt tragedy's central figure, the long-haired, dreamy-eyed student Anatolii Lamanov. Chairman of the Kronstadt Soviet in 1917 and chief editor of its Izvestiia, Lamanov became the ideologist of the 1921 uprising and was soon after executed as a 'counter-revolutionary'.

The Bolsheviks And Workers Control written by Maurice Brinton and has been published by On Our Own Authority Pub this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-21 with History categories.

Originally published as a pamphlet in 1970, Maurice Brinton's "The Bolsheviks and Workers' Control" presents a concise yet brilliant historical critique of Revolutionary Russia from the year 1917 to 1921, from the Bolshevik's ascension to state power, up to--and in the aftermath of--Lenin and Trotsky's brutal suppression of the 1921 Kronstadt Uprising. This small volume offers a critical understanding of the history of the Russian Revolution that has too often been obscured by romanticized Leninist revision. With devastating documentation and attention to detail, Brinton's writing exposes the Bolshevik counterrevolution and its hostile resentment toward the self-mobilization of the Russian working class. Additionally, Brinton's work illuminates crucial distinctions between workers' self-management of industry and "workers' control" (an alternate idea coined by the Bolshevik dictatorship). In this way, his work asserts and defends the revolutionary idea that the working class itself can govern the affairs of society, outside of the authority of any state power or ruling class--whatever its name or form.
