From the back cover: Over the past 15 years, Canada has seen a major restructuring of her economy as a result of spectacular growth in service sector industries. Other important changes include the feminization of the labour force, inceased part-time employment, wider use of technology, deregulation and globalization of trade. This study begins by reviewing competing hypotheses for the pattern of change in the service sector and follows through with an empirical account of these changes and an examination of the forces behind the employment adjustment in this sector. Policy questions arising from these observations are presented for future studies. The author has also developed two case studies to illustrate some common labour adjustment and industrial relations, and how actual companies approached these issues.

The rise to prominence of the service sector - heralded over half a century ago as the great hope for the twenty-first century - has come to fruition. In many cases, employment in the service sector now outnumbers that in manufacturing sectors, and it is accepted that in all developed countries, the service sector is the only one in which employment will grow in future. The reasons for this is the subject of much controversy and debate, the outcomes of which are not merely of academic interest but of decisive importance for economic policy and the quality of working and living conditions in future. In order to examine these various arguments, research teams from eight European countries worked together for three years on a comparative study of the evolution of service sector employment in EU member states. They also investigated working and employment conditions in five very different service industries (banking, retailing, hospitals, IT services and care of the elderly) in a number of countries, and the results of their research are presented in this informative new collection, of interest to students academics and researchers involved in all aspects of industrial economics.

This book takes a fresh look at the issue of job quality, analyzing employer behaviour and discussing the agenda for policy intervention. Between 1997 and 2002, more than twelve million new jobs were created in the European Union and labour market participation increased by more than eight million. Whilst a good deal of these new jobs have been created in high-tech and/or knowledge-intensive sectors providing workers with decent pay, job security, training and career development prospects, a significant share of jobs, particularly in labour-intensive service sector industries fail to do so. This volume provides new perspectives on this highly debated and policy relevant issue.

Labour Market Segmentation In Malaysian Services written by Khong How Ling and has been published by NUS Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-01-01 with Business & Economics categories.

This is the first book to look at labor in Malaysian services, and also the first to use the labor market segmentation approach to study Malaysian labor. As in most other countries, the services sector has long accounted for more of the labor force than manufacturing in Malaysia. Studies of those working in services in developing countries have tended to focus on the public sector and, in recent decades, the informal sector. This study of workers in services also covers those in private enterprises, both modern (e.g. financial services) and traditional (e.g. transportation services). This study also looks more generally at Malaysian labor market segmentation, especially at ethnicity and gender. Of particular importance are the impact of structural change in the economy and the interaction between these processes and the labor market on job and pay opportunities.

This report is concerned with the nature of the service economy. It looks at conceptual issues associated with services, the factors which have traditionally distinguished service activity from the production of goods, and how innovations in technology and industrial organization are altering these orthodox distinctions. It focuses on explanations for the rapid expansions of the service sector, and documents the shift from goods to services. It also examines the issue of nonstandard employment in Canada, and focuses on the skill content of jobs. In addition, it addresses the relationship between human capital and employment outcomes, and Canada's capacity for developing human resources. It reports the results of a major Economic Council study of income distribution trends. Finally, it presents conclusions and policy implications.

Employment And Labour Market In North East India written by Virginius Xaxa and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-08-06 with Political Science categories.

This book examines the structural changes in the labour market in North-East India. Going beyond the conventional study of tea and agricultural sectors, it focuses on the nature, pattern and structure of work and employment in the region as well as documents emerging shifts in the labour force towards farm to non-farm dynamics. The chapters explore historical developments in employment patterns, labour market policies, issues of gender and social-religious dimensions, as well as point to growing forms of casual, informal and contractual labour across sectors. Through large-scale data and detailed case studies on unfree labour in plantations and those employed in crafts, handloom and the manufacturing industry, the book provides insights into labour and employment in the region. It also delves into the temporal and spatial dimensions of non-farm employment and its relationship with rural income distribution and labour mobility. By bringing interdisciplinary perspectives from scholars working on North-East India, this work fills a major gap in the political economy of the labour market in the region. The volume will be useful to scholars and researchers of development studies, North-East India studies, labour studies, economics, sociology and political science as well to those involved with governance and policymaking.
