In July of 1944 Stalin's troops cross the western border of Russia, into Latvia. Eight-year old Vera and her family attempt to flee from the country but there are no more boats to Sweden. The sound of gunfire rings out; men like Papa are being shot. Vera's father knows that he must escape alone, on foot, in the darkness of night. He makes a promise to his daughter: After the war, when Stalin's army has left our country, I will come home again... But after the war the Baltic countries of Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia are forced to become part of the USSR. Can Vera cling to the hope of her father's return, even after an 'iron curtain' separates her country from the rest of the world? In school, where Stalin imposes a new curriculum, Vera is often reprimanded but she excels in one area: with her beautiful singing voice. She is part of the large school chorus which will sing at the summer Song Festival. Stalin wants the world to think that all is well in the USSR and thus declares that the world should watch the Song Festival in Riga. Will Vera's father at last return? It has been her strong hope, through the years. "...Suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us." Romans 5:3

Latvia written by Paul Brummell and has been published by Bradt Travel Guides this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-06-07 with Travel categories.

The new, sixth and thoroughly updated edition of Bradt’s Latvia remains the only standalone guide to this fascinating and ever-changing Baltic nation. This is a small but enchantingly varied country that will appeal to culture vultures, history buffs, outdoors enthusiasts and foodies alike. Latvia is best known internationally through its capital city Riga, whose centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site combining a medieval core providing testimony of its importance as a port of the Hanseatic League and an outer area containing the most extensive assemblage of Art Nouveau buildings in Europe. Latvia is much larger than Denmark or Switzerland yet, with a population of under two million, is one of the most verdant countries in Europe. A low-lying landscape of forests, lakes and marshes offers an increasing range of rural tourism options facilitated by recent EU infrastructural investments. Why not go hiking or kayaking in Gauja National Park, go cycling or explore Latgale’s lakes? In summer, Latvia’s Baltic Sea coast comes into its own: almost 500km long, much comprising pristine sandy beaches backed by dunes. Seaside options range from cosmopolitan Jurmala, once a favoured holiday destination of the Soviet elite, to out of the way idyllic spots the visitor will have to themselves. Latvia’s complex history results in tourist attractions ranging from medieval castles to the Baroque splendour of Rundale Palace, and from Daugavpils’s Mark Rothko arts centre to a once-secret Soviet nuclear bunker. Latvian culture and identity reaches peak expression in the five-yearly Song and Dance Festival, involving forty thousand performers. If you can’t wait for that, why not uncover Latvia’s pagan roots, including the mystical stones of the Pokaini Forest, or relax in a combination of traditional saunas and modern spas. For something completely different, you could even visit Karosta former military prison, where the intrepid can book a night in a cell, sleeping on an iron bunk. Balancing coverage of the country’s cultural attractions with guidance on where and how to enjoy its natural environment, Bradt’s Latvia is the perfect guidebook to inform and inspire your visit.

But Where Is The Lamb written by James Goodman and has been published by Schocken this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-10 with Religion categories.

“I didn’t think he’d do it. I really didn’t think he would. I thought he’d say, whoa, hold on, wait a minute. We made a deal, remember, the land, the blessing, the nation, the descendants as numerous as the sands on the shore and the stars in the sky.” So begins James Goodman’s original and urgent encounter with one of the most compelling and resonant stories ever told—God’s command to Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac. A mere nineteen lines in the book of Genesis, it rests at the heart of the history, literature, theology, and sacred rituals of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. For more than two millennia, people throughout the world have grappled with the troubling questions about sacrifice, authority, obedience, and faith to which the story gives rise. Writing from the vantage of “a reader, a son, a Jew, a father, a skeptic, a historian, a lover of stories, and a writer,” Goodman gives us an enthralling narrative history that moves from its biblical origins to its place in the cultures and faiths of our time. He introduces us to the commentary of Second Temple sages, rabbis and priests of the late antiquity, and early Islamic exegetes (some of whom imagined that Ishmael was the nearly sacrificed son). He examines Syriac hymns (in which Sarah stars), Hebrew chronicles of the First Crusade (in which Isaac often dies), and medieval English mystery plays. He looks at the art of Europe’s golden age, the philosophy of Kant and Kierkegaard, and the panoply of twentieth-century interpretation, sacred and profane, including the work of Bob Dylan, Elie Wiesel, and A. B. Yehoshua. In illuminating how so many others have understood this story, Goodman tells a gripping and provocative story of his own.
